America's Public Schools: From the Common School to

William J. Reese's history of public schools in America examines why citizens have repeatedly turned to the schools to improve society and how successive generations of reformers have tried to alter the curriculum and teaching practice to achieve their goals.

Organized around two themes―education as the means for reforming American society and ongoing reform within the schools themselves―this study examines two centuries of American public education. It explores school and society in the nineteenth century, including public school growth in the antebellum and postbellum eras; competing visions of education and reform during the first half of the twentieth century; and social change and reform from the 1950s through the 1980s.

Reese emphasizes the centrality of schools in the history of reform and their persistent allegiance to traditional practices and pedagogy despite two centuries of complaint by romantics and progressives. He describes tradition as a reliable friend of public schools, despite the enormous changes that have occurred over time: the centralization of authority, professionalization of teaching staff, and the expansion of curricular offerings.

Reese's clear and accessible book is an original interpretation of the history of public elementary and secondary schools in America. It should become a standard text for future teachers as well as scholars of education.

Review

In this extraordinary book, Reese tells the complex story of American education in a form that is simple but not simplistic, mixing cogent generalizations about historical patterns with vivid accounts of individuals who were particularly influential or representative of the times. He expertly examines the American ambivalence about this institution―seen as both the answer and the source of social problems, making it both the means and the object of reform.

(David Labaree, Stanford University)

A very good introductory survey for anyone who wants to learn more about American education... Provides fresh information about familiar topics.

(Sunday Times)

This is a superb history of our public schools, one that is clearly and colorfully written.

(Don T. Martin Journal of American History)

A brilliant contribution to the field. It is a gracefully written, well-researched, and deeply engaging book that deserves a wide readership.

(Jeffrey Mirel Paedagogica Historica)

Reese has delivered in one volume an analysis as synthetic, intelligent, and importantly, deeply engaged with the most enduring issues in popular education as we are likely to encounter for some time.

(Stephen Lassonde Journal of Social History)

America's Public Schools is solid, if not perfect.

(Dave Moyar New York Journal of Books―West)

The work provides a detailed description of over two-hundred years of public schooling and explores the dual effects of public reform policy as an influence on school policy and the work of schools themselves in adapting to evolving social needs.

Definite MUST HAVE for Educators, History Buffs or those Curious
By T. Young
Just recently having gone back to school I deided to do my first research study on the history of education in America and immigration. Having pretty much no idea what to chose I came across this book. Boy am I glad!!! This is an outstanding book that gives an in-depth look into the history of public education in America. Reese goes all the way back to the original "common school" and covers 200+ years of history in public education.

Reese discusses major reformers - you know those poeple that were so profound that you wondered why "that" school was named after "that" person. This book tells who those reformers were and why they were so important. What is better is that Reese does not get "overly educational" on you! What is also important is how Reese illustrates just through the history alone how society and schools are intertwined.

Definitely a good book and more than what I expected. Take your time with this book to hear and see all that William J Reese is trying to show and reveal to the reader!

Cited in a S.Ct. dissent
By David M. Wagner
I bought this because Justice Thomas cited it in his bracing dissent in Morse v. Frederick, but for my purposes (researching the Meyer-Pierce doctrine) I found works by Carl Kaestle and and Thomas and Lorraine Pangle for useful.

Chez nous: Branché sur le monde francophone (4th Edition), by Albert Valdman, Cathy Pons, Mary Ellen Scullen

For courses in Introductory French.

Building on the success of earlier editions and anchored in the most current innovations in language instruction, the Fourth Edition of Chez nous offers a richly nuanced focus on the Francophone world through a highly integrative and process-oriented approach to the development of language skills that emphasizes the “Five C’s” and is consistent with the National Standards.

The Fourth Edition Chez nous is a complete elementary French program designed for use at colleges and universities, over two or three terms or semesters. Using a careful progression from skill-developing to skill-using activities and a sophisticated treatment of Francophone culture, the text and its full complement of supplementary materials help students develop listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills as well as insights into other cultures by exposing them to authentic, contemporary French and encouraging them to express themselves on a variety of topics.

NEW TO THIS EDITION:

  • Substantive new content. Language use and cultural realities are constantly changing, and this is reflected in Chez nous, 4/e.
    • Vocabulary presentations ( Points de dpart) related to the topics of education, health, media, technology, and ecology have been revised, along with their corresponding art. Some new topics have been added to allow students to discuss important topics such as civic responsibility and multiculturalism.
    • Correspondingly, nearly one third of the cultural notes (Vie et culture) are new or revised to include additional topics (such as volunteerism) or updated information, offering a more contemporary and nuanced picture of France and the Francophone world.
    • More than a third of the skill building activities (Lisons, coutons, Observons, Parlons, crivons) are new or revised for this fourth edition, introducing new texts, video clips, and authentic tasks. In particular, half of the readings are significantly revised or new, including new literary selections and journalistic prose texts.
    • The themes of the Venez chez nous ! cultural lessons have been broadened in Chapitres 3 and 4, to reflect the overall chapter focus. Chapitre 3 now emphasizes study and work in francophone countries, while Chapitre 4 treats aspects of daily routine across the francophone world.
  • Further refinement of the cyclical scope and sequence. Users’ feedback has led to additional modification of the scope and sequence for enhanced linguistic effectiveness and flexibility in the classroom.
    • The chapter treating food and its related grammatical content has been moved to the first half of the book (Chapitre 5); this allows for earlier treatment of useful vocabulary and structural features such as the partitive.
    • The treatment of direct and indirect object pronouns has been extended over two chapters (Chapitres 6, 7), for ease in acquisition; personal pronouns are then reviewed in the final chapter (Chapitre 12), where their most frequent combinations are presented and practiced.
  • Increased attention to the development of learner strategies.
    • Revised crivons activities target explicit writing strategies, and a four-step process now encourages students to draft and revise their writing, focusing first on content and then on form.
    • A new feature, Fiche pratique, outlines practical strategies to help students learn specific lesson content (for example, showing them ways to organize the new material, how to interact with native speakers using new content or structures, or how to test themselves).
    • New comprehension based activities, or in-put activities, within many of the practice sections for the Formes et fonctions allow students to make an initial form-meaning link as they learn new grammatical structures. The most current research on language learning emphasizes in-put activities as a key step in language acquisition.
  • Increased opportunity for individualized learning and practice
    • With MyFrenchLab, a new, nationally hosted online learning system, students and instructors have available a wide range of language-learning tools and resources. The learning experience is personalized through readiness checks and grammar tutorials, and students progress via individualized practice with recording capabilities. Incorporating the Student Activities Manual (SAM) and other types of practice, students can complete their assignments online, while instructors tailor assignments and grade and monitor student progress in new ways, such as providing spoken comments and detailed markups of student writing.
  • New activities incorporating film and music videos found on video sharing sites are now a feature of the Instructor’s Resource Manual. Step-by-step classroom treatments offer many options for integrating music and film into the program.
  • Chez nous, 4/e incorporates a few of the most widely accepted elements of the Orthographic Reform of 1990. Notably, changes related to the use of the accent grave have been implemented, affecting some verb conjugations in the future and conditional (for verbs like prfrer) as well as the spelling of individual lexical items, such as crmerie and vnement. Also, all numbers are now written with connecting hyphens, eliminating ambiguity and simplifying the learner’s task (i.e. cinq-mille-deux-cent-soixante-et-onze).
  • Chapter openers now provide an overview of expected learner outcomes. At the end of each chapter, a new self-assessment checklist encourages students to take stock of what they have learned to do.
  • New design and art increase the user-friendliness of Chez nous, 4/e. More abundant photos offer a richer depiction of the francophone world and combine with updated line art to enhance the contemporary focus and visual appeal of the book.

    Review

“Overall, this is an excellent textbook — outstanding even… this can be the best introductory French textbook by far to date. I was extremely impressed with the comprehensive nature of the book and the detail. The authors truly did a remarkable job in creating this textbook. Chapeau !”

~ Caroline Nash, Louisiana State University

"The program works extremely well at my university. It has produced a high level of linguistic competency within the context of the first year of instruction in all four skills areas. In addition, it works very well with the global interests of many of our students. The book is also easy to teach from and works well with a variety of approaches. "

~ Jean Marie Schultz, University of California at Santa Barbara

"Chez nous is one of the few books on the market that has given grammar the attention it deserves. The authors are clearly aware of the issues involving grammar pedagogy, and they have admirably integrated findings from the field of applied linguistics into the development of their grammar explanations and activities. I appreciate the fact that, usually, the activities are not mechanical drills; instead, they are developed in a way that attempts to mirror naturally occurring discourse.”

~ Stacey Katz, University of Utah

    ALERT TO STUDENTS!
    By C. Roff
For students needing this textbook for a class that uses the MyFrenchLab, DO NOT PURCHASE THIS BOOK! I bought this book new from Amazon specifically because it was advertised as the MyFrenchLab edition. However, I found that it does not provide an access code for logging onto the MyFrenchLab website. I will have to either purchase an access code on the Pearson website for $88 or get a new book at my university's bookstore for about $180. That puts the cost of the textbook at over $200, more than a new one would have cost at my university's overpriced bookstore!

While this textbook references the MyFrenchLab resources provided online, it is not a full package. You will have to purchase MyFrenchLab separately. I recommend either you buy this book used for a much lower price and buy the access code on the Pearson website or go ahead and buy it new. Don't get ripped off.

    The book is great.....BUT:
    By H. Mounkid
This book is great! However, be aware that this textbook requires ONLINE coursework! You need to purchase a separate membership through the publisher if the textbook you purchase online doesn't have the membership code included. I ended up getting a great deal on my textbook, compared to the campus bookstore price, only to find out in class that I needed to purchase the membership code, too. I ended up paying the same price for the book and the code together, that I would have paid at the campus bookstore in one purchase anyway.

    French book
    By Diane
Book is easy to follow with vocabulary at the end of each section. There are not many changes from the 3rd Edition. Different verbs and vocabulary are introduced in each lesson with exercises to work on in a class setting or as homework. This edition will cover several levels of French.

Albrecht's Foundation Concepts (The Albrecht Papers, Vol. I), by Ph.D. William A. Albrecht

After many years, The Albrecht Papers Vol. 1 is back in print. Nature gave up her rare secrets to Dr. Albrecht simply because he was a curious farm boy who liked logic and adventure. Through his extensive experiments with growing plants, soils and their effect on animals, he sustained his theory and observation that a declining soil fertility, due to a lack of organic material, major elements, and trace minerals - or a marked imbalance in these nutrients - was responsible for poor crops and in turn for pathological conditions in animals fed deficient feeds from soils. These papers addressed to scientists, and especially to farmers who worked with nature are as valid today as when they were first written.

CAGED comes with 2 bonus features, see below.

As a society we’ve become all too familiar with horrific tales of child abuse. Yet, in 2001 a legal case in a rural community near Toronto proved so bizarre that it gained international attention. It concerned two teenage boys kept locked in cages and forced to wear diapers. Unbelievably, their caregivers thought they were doing their best for these “difficult” youths. Even visiting relatives regarded this sorry state as normal.

Why didn’t teachers, social workers and doctors in regular contact with the boys intervene? Why didn’t the boys complain when they had the opportunity?

The extended family imprisoning these boys seemed unusually close despite occasional feuds. In fact, their secrets probably caused them to cling together in ways that gave dire meaning to the term “dysfunctional family.” Here’s proof of how abuse - physical, emotional, sexual, spiritual - spirals down through generations claiming new victims, and how good intentions can be overwhelmed by one’s own need to survive.

Caged is a true story based on transcripts of a 2003 legal case with names changed to protect the victims.

    2 BONUS FEATURES

    MAGGIE & THE PEDOPHILES
In 1987 Sylvia Fraser published My Father’s House: a Memoir of Incest and of Healing - one of the first books to expose the sexual abuse rampant in our culture. The New York Times said it was “as telling a chronicle of the times as The Catcher in the Rye or To Kill a Mocking Bird.”

After writing her memoir, Fraser thought she’d recovered all the memories connected to her abuse, so long denied. She was wrong. She began to recall horrifying experiences of how, age 8, she was taken by her father to a child brothel where she was photographed and abused.

This isn’t a story about what perverts do to children - we know that. It’s a story about survival and our ability to cut off memories too terrible to endure. It’s also an inspiring story about the need to reclaim those painful memories in order to become whole. Most remarkably, it’s a story about the almost miraculous way in which the Universe seems to cooperate to help us to find what we need to know. On the simplest level, it’s the story of a parrot, an ice-cream cone, a strange rash, a broken leg and an unusually swift healing, leading to a climax that proves fact can be stranger than fiction.

    DENIAL: The Sexual Abuse Wars
Hardly a day goes by without a news story about the prosecution of yet another high-profile person accused of sexually abusing children. Most recently, sentencing of the once untouchable Jerry Sandusty, former Penn State football coach, to 60 years seems to send a clear warning to all child molesters that they will be caught and punished. The same is true of the outing of pedophile priests in North America and Europe, along with those who protected them.

Yet, history has shown that the prosecution of child-molesters has typically been followed by a period in which the problem is buried all over again. Could this happen in Western society? Could children again become the unprotected playthings of lustful adults?

Sylvia Fraser - herself an incest survivor - believes this could happen.

In DENIAL she shows how children have been betrayed in the past, and suggests the unexpected guise in which a new wave of betrayal could occur. Rich in anecdote, DENIAL draws on Fraser’s own experience with other survivors, with the media, with accused abusers following the 1987 publication of her groundbreaking book, My Father’s House: a Memoir of Incest and of Healing. In her penetrating examination, Fraser implicates two of the most influential figures of the last century: Sigmund Freud, father of psychoanalysis, and sexologist Alfred Kinsey.

    Not worth the price
    By Amazon Customer
This took all of 15 minutes to read. While informative & well written, it should be priced closer to .99 because it's so short. Had I noticed, I wouldn't have bought it. You could probably Google & get the same info for free.

There is no such thing as a sexually consenting Child
    By Avid Reader
My title is the last sentence of Sylvia's book and it says it all. Firstly Sylvia details a true case where 2 boys were abused through out their lives and the adults around them did nothing. Her book demonstrates how abuse can escalate from trying to control a situation, into sadism and violence, how generations of abusers become abusers themselves and why and how we can so easily miss a plea for help. That a judge of the court could come to the conclusion he did, makes me wonder about justice and how corrupt it might be. Thank God there was some justice in the appeal. Throughout this book, Sylvia attempts to unravel the many misconceptions and psychobabble of decades of thinkers like Freud, Kinsey and others who created the climate of disbelief surrounding child abuse. She opens the pandora's box on how many women (and men)have led damaged lives because of abuse in Child hood. How many have been treated for something that was a symptom of abuse but never discovered. That it is possible to be in denial but have suffered abuse. She uses this book to discuss more of her first book and how truth came to light for herself. It did not read like a text book, so the reading was not too technical and wordy, but the subject is not an easy one. However we all need to be informed.
