The Dark Tower, Vol. 4: Wizard and Glass, by Stephen King

Soon to be a major motion picture starring Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba

The fourth volume in the brilliant Dark Tower Series is “splendidly tense…rip-roaring” (Publishers Weekly)—a #1 national bestseller about an epic quest to save the universe.

In Wizard and Glass, Stephen King is “at his most ebullient…sweeping readers up in…swells of passion” (Publishers Weekly) as Roland the Gunslinger, Eddie, Susannah, and Jake survive Blaine the Mono’s final crash, only to find themselves stranded in an alternate version of Topeka, Kansas, that has been ravaged by the superflu virus. While following the deserted I-70 toward a distant glass palace, Roland recounts his tragic story about a seaside town called Hambry, where he fell in love with a girl named Susan Delgado, and where he and his old tet-mates Alain and Cuthbert battled the forces of John Farson, the harrier who—with a little help from a seeing sphere called Maerlyn’s Grapefruit—ignited Mid-World’s final war.

Filled with “blazing action” (Booklist), the fourth installment in the Dark Tower Series “whets the appetite for more” (Bangor Daily News). Wizard and Glass is a thrilling read from “the reigning King of American popular literature” (Los Angeles Daily News).

Amazon.com Review
Wizard and Glass, the fourth episode in King's white-hot Dark Tower series, is a sci-fi/fantasy novel that contains a post-apocalyptic Western love story twice as long. It begins with the series' star, world-weary Roland, and his world-hopping posse (an ex-junkie, a child, a plucky woman in a wheelchair, and a talking dog-like pet named Oy the Bumbler) trapped aboard a runaway train. The train is a psychotic multiple personality that intends to commit suicide with them at 800 m.p.h.--unless Roland and pals can outwit it in a riddling contest.

It's a great race, for the mind and pulse. Movies should be this good. Then comes a 567-page flashback about Roland at age 14. It's a well-marbled but meaty tale. Roland and two teen homies must rescue his first love from the dirty old drooling mayor of a post-apocalyptic cowboy town, thwart a civil war by blowing up oil tanks, and seize an all-seeing crystal ball from Rhea, a vampire witch. The love scenes are startlingly prominent and earthier than most romance novels (they kiss until blood trickles from her lip).

After an epic battle ending in a box canyon to end all box canyons, we're back with grizzled, grown-up Roland and the train-wreck survivors in a parallel world: Kansas in 1986, after a plague. The finale is a weird fantasy takeoff on The Wizard of Oz. Some readers will feel that the latest novel in King's most ambitious series has too many pages--almost 800--but few will deny it's a page-turner.

From Library Journal
Frank Muller's reading of King's fourth book in a projected seven-part series (e.g., The Waste Lands: The Dark Tower, Bk. 3, Audio Reviews LJ 2/15/92) is effective in creating a suspenseful and fearful atmosphere. We find Roland, the knight errant/gunslinger, continuing his quest to attain the Dark Tower, the source of destructive forces in his Mid-World. A major portion of this work is a recounting by Roland of his ill-fated love affair with Susan Delgado. The writing is expectedly imaginative, the story line engrossing, and the characters vivid. The listener is carried along through alternating Western, urban, and futuristic settings. The work stands on its own, incorporating a summary of Books 1-3, but will be better appreciated if listened to as part of the whole. Recommended for sf/fantasy collections and Stephen King fans.?Catherine Swenson, Norwich Univ. Lib., Northfield, Vt.
Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
The fourth volume in King's protean fantasy saga, The Dark Tower, doesn't advance its heroes' journey to that edifice much from where The Waste Lands (1992) left them, but at least it gets them out of the fix they were in and primed to get into another. The book's 720 pages are mostly devoted to a flashback in which principal protagonist Roland of Mid-World relates his initial exploits--at 14--as a gunslinger. Those adventures involved plenty of mayhem and also his first, ultimately disastrous love affair. King acknowledges in an afterword that it took him a long time to write this story because he was not confident of his ability to write of "the heat and passion of seventeen [sic]." Many may feel his mistrust was well placed, for the romantic stuff is rather a yawn. Unfortunately, the blazing action that succeeds it is hackneyed stuff typical of movie and TV westerns--strictly intentionally, though, for Roland's world of origin is a post^-nuclear holocaust culture that has reverted to earlier ways, including those of knightly chivalry and pistol-packin' cowboys. Still, King is the genre fiction writer's genre fiction writer, and the action that is hackneyed here is also, as noted, blazing--brightly. Ray Olson

The Middle of the Best modern epic story
By Richard Bradley
I don't like writing about these books as though they are independent. As I may have said before, to me, this is one story. I have read the Dark Tower in its entirety at least the times counting now. The first time took years. The second all the way through, which I am doing again now. This time on Kindle. Anyway, this volume is my least favorite. It does hold the beginning and the end together, which is what themiddle should do. The story of Susan is just a little too long. But I know why Roland must tell it, and why King had to write it. You might know too. So now on to the next part. I need to finish it before they release the movie they are making as it cannot live up to what is on these pages or what is in my head. There are more worlds than these.

4 down three to go
By Amazon Customer
I liked this book better than the previous one, because of the back story. It filled in gaps and changed the genre. I am extremely interested in starting the fifth book in the series to see the extent to which he will incorporate his other books into this one. I would elaborate but I don't want to spoil it. If you made it through three in the series, read four. I am moving on to five now. As I mentioned in my review of three I took a 20 year hiatus not only from the Dark Tower, but from Stephen King. I am glad I am back, it's like running into an old friend you haven't seen for a very long time that you were very close to and you wonder , how did we lose touch? I always enjoyed their company so much.

A frantic review of a past long gone
By Marcello Milanezi
I've been reading the Dark Tower saga for a year or so ething now, sometimes I stop and read some other book in between, and I also decided not to jump into the Dark Tower comics before finishing the books.

That said, so far this was certainly my favorite book. It starts with a bang, concluding the insanity that is Blaine the Mono, only to slow down to a series of frustrating facts (most importantly the advent of the thinnies) that culminated in Roland telling the story of his early years, what happend after he became a gunslinger, of how he met his first love at the age of 14 and how, with his trusted and beloved friends Cuthbert and Alain, was swept away by "ka" into a sea of messianic proportions no e of them could've ever foreseen. The spectacular conclusion is a groundbreaker that shall not be mentioned, least there be spoilers, suffice to say ot's the grand comeback to Roland's new ka-tet, formed by Eddie, Susannah, Jake, and Oy. Most of the story, however, does take place in his past, when innocence was utterly wiped away in rains of blood.

"A masterpiece of scholarship . . . brings to life the legacy of one of Saudi Arabia's most interesting and influential figures."—Professor Anoush Ehteshami, Durham University

In 1964 Faisal bin Abdul Aziz became king of a country holding a quarter of the world's oil reserves, also home to Mecca and Medina. He was called "the most powerful Arab ruler in centuries." Eleven years later, in front of television cameras, his nephew shot him at point-blank range.

In this authoritative biography, Alexei Vassiliev tells the story of a pious, cautious, and resolute leader who steered Saudi Arabia through a minefield of domestic problems, inter-Arab relations and the decline of Soviet influence in the Middle East. King Faisal maintained ties with both Egypt and the United States through two Arab- Israeli wars and the 1973 Arab oil embargo, which revolutionized the world energy market. Throughout, he staked high hopes on cooperation with the United States, a relationship that is still vital to both countries' interests.

Exhaustively researched and including original documents and interviews in Arabic, Russian, and English, King Faisal of Saudi Arabia: Personality, Faith and Times offers a unique perspective of this seminal figure and is key to understanding the Arab world today.

Alexei Vassiliev is a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) and director of the Institute for African Studies (RAS). He is the author of over thirty books, including the critically acclaimed The History of Saudi Arabia, winner of the Choice Outstanding Academic Book Award.

Review
'A masterpiece of scholarship - brings to life the legacy of one of Saudi Arabia's most interesting and also influential figures. This book, clearly a result of years of research and reflection, is the most comprehensive and accomplished account of King Faisal's upbringing, his youth, and reign.' Professor Anoush Ehteshami, Durham University " - detailed and fascinating biography - the story(Vassiliev) tells is a remarkable one. Faisal was an authoritarian ruler who stamped out opposition, and Western diplomats often found him cantankerous. Still, if his father created Saudi Arabia within its current borders, it was Faisal who knitted it together, using oil wealth to turn a backward desert society into a modern state and an actor on the world stage." The Economist

Take This Bread: A Radical Conversion, by Sara Miles

Early one morning, for no earthly reason, Sara Miles, raised an atheist, wandered into a church, received communion, and found herself transformed–embracing a faith she’d once scorned. A lesbian left-wing journalist who’d covered revolutions around the world, Miles didn’t discover a religion that was about angels or good behavior or piety; her faith centered on real hunger, real food, and real bodies. Before long, she turned the bread she ate at communion into tons of groceries, piled on the church’s altar to be given away. Within a few years, she and the people she served had started nearly a dozen food pantries in the poorest parts of their city.

Take This Bread is rich with real-life Dickensian characters–church ladies, millionaires, schizophrenics, bishops, and thieves–all blown into Miles’s life by the relentless force of her newfound calling. Here, in this achingly beautiful, passionate book, is the living communion of Christ.

“The most amazing book.”
–Anne Lamott

“Engaging, funny, and highly entertaining . . . Miles comments, often with great insight, on the ugliness that many people associate with a particular brand of Christianity. Why would any thinking person become a Christian? is one of the questions she addresses, and her answer is also compelling reading.”
–Booklist

“Powerful . . . This book is a gem [and] will remain with you forever.”
–The Decatur Daily

“What Miles learns about faith, about herself and about the gift of giving and receiving graciously are wonderful gifts for the reader.”
–National Public Radio

“[A] joyful memoir . . . advocates big-tent Christianity in the truest sense . . . a story of finding sustenance and passing it on.”
–National Catholic Reporter

“Rigorously honest, Take This Bread demonstrates how hard–and how necessary–it is to welcome everyone to the table, without exception.”
–San Francisco Chronicle

“Moving, delightful and significant.”
–The Christian Century

From Publishers Weekly
Where is it written that literary women must move to coastal California (if they don't already live there), become Episcopalians and write conversion memoirs? Miles, like recent memoirists Diana Butler Bass, Nora Gallagher and Lindsey Crittenden, loves Jesus and detests the religious right, though she is also critical of "the sappy, Jesus-and-cookies tone of mild-mannered liberal Christianity." Mild-mannered she is not. Converted at age 46 when she impulsively walked into a church and received communion for the first time, the former war correspondent suddenly understood her life's mission: to feed the hungry. What her parish needed, she decided, was a food pantry—and within a year (and over opposition from some fellow parishioners) she had started one that offered free cereal, fruit and vegetables to hundreds of San Francisco's indigent every Friday. Not willing to turn anyone away, she raised funds and helped set up other food pantries in impoverished areas, occasionally "crossing the line from self-righteous do-gooder to crusading zealot." For Miles, Christianity "wasn't an argument I could win, or even resolve. It wasn't a thesis. It was a mystery that I was finally willing to swallow." Grittier than many religious memoirs, Miles's story is a perceptive account of one woman's wholehearted, activist faith. (Feb. 20)

From Booklist
A self-proclaimed blue-state, secular-intellectual, lesbian, left-wing journalist with a strong skeptical streak, Miles was hardly a candidate for Christian conversion. Yet convert she did, wholeheartedly at age 46. For upon her first Communion (in an Episcopal church), everything changed (she still can't fully explain the feelings that arose during her first Communion). She realized that "what I'd been doing with my life all along was what I was meant to do: feed people" and started a food pantry in her gritty San Francisco neighborhood. The journey from skeptical secularist to devout Christian was long, complicated, and often convoluted (her parents were avid atheists), but the story she makes of it is engaging, funny, and highly entertaining, including many surprises as well as the occasional wrong turn. Incidentally, Miles comments, often with great insight, on the ugliness that many people associate with a particular brand of Christianity. Why would any thinking person become a Christian? is one of the questions she addresses, and her answer is also compelling reading. Ray Olson

Review
Advance praise for Take This Bread

“A love song to the feast at the altar and the feast of a food pantry written with grit, authority and integrity.”
–Nora Gallagher, author of Changing Light

“Sara Miles’s joy, confusion, and passion for the Christian life, together with her skill as a professional journalist and the fullness of her own humanity, have produced what has to be the finest confession of faith I’ve read in years. Take This Bread is a good, tight, absorbing read.”
–Phyllis Tickle, author of The Divine Hours and former Religion Editor for Publishers Weekly

“This book is a stunner. Beautifully and simply written, it is a wonderfully straightforward account of a life and a conversion which will leave many readers, as it left me, tingling with longing that such signs and wonders might emerge in and through our own stories. Sara has come by the great truths of the Christian faith honestly. The story of how people grow through becoming empowered to be givers, and not mere receivers of handouts is a wonderful glimpse at a true emergence of Church.”
–James Alison, Catholic theologian, priest, and author of Faith Beyond Resentment

“Some books you can’t put down, some you shouldn’t–this one’s both. Sara Miles’s story of spiritual nourishment recalls Patch Adams, but she’s also a writer like John Muir or Jane Addams, a gifted stylist whose passion translates to vivid storytelling. Take This Bread is necessary reading, I would think, for anyone who’s ever taken a bite out of anything.”
–J. C. Hallman, author of The Devil is a Gentleman

hunger and holiness
By Daniel B. Clendenin
Sara Miles describes herself as a blue-state, secular intellectual, a lesbian, and a left-wing journalist who developed habits of deep scepticism from covering revolutionary movements in Central America. Her grandparents on both sides were missionaries, but in reaction to that upbringing her parents were actively hostile to religion. So, it's a bit of an understatement that she also describes herself as a "very unlikely convert." But at the age of 46 Miles walked into Saint Gregory's Episcopal Church in San Francisco, partook of the Eucharist, and experienced a radical conversion. She had never heard a Gospel reading, never said the Lord's Prayer, and knew only one person who went to church. Today she is on staff at Saint Gregory's.

That was some eight years ago and only the beginning of further conversions. Building upon her life experiences as a chef, her conversion through the Eucharist, passion for the poor, and the founding vision of St. Gregory's, in 2000 Miles started a food pantry at her church that gave away free groceries (not meals) with no questions asked and no forms to fill out. Each week food for about 400 families was placed around the eucharistic altar. Such was the open communion and unconditional acceptance that she experienced at Saint Gregory's and intended to extend to anyone who was hungry. Through connections with the San Francisco Food Bank, and the generosity of unexpected donors, the miracle of the loaves multiplied and Miles went on to jump start nine more food pantries around the city.

Mundane food for the body became not only a sign of God's kingdom but, as theologians would say, the actual thing signified. Those who received wanted to give. Care for broken spirits accompanied bread for hungry bodies. If you have spent any time in church you will especially appreciate Miles' candid descriptions of the disruptions and divisions that the food pantries caused at Saint Gregory's. At one point more homeless, schizophrenic, and drug-crazed hungry people came to the food pantry than artsy, proper worshippers to the church services. While Miles saw this as a blessing, others saw it as a curse of sorts.

With her story of radical Christian conversion and the incarnation of daily discipleship Miles will join other feminist authors who have earned a broad readership because of the authenticity with which they have written about loving Christ, the church, and the world--Joan Chittister, Nora Gallagher, Anne Lamott, Kathleen Norris, Marilynne Robinson, and Barbara Brown Taylor come to mind. When I finished her book my mind kept returning to Paul's words in 1 Corinthians 4:21, "The kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power," and in Galatians 5:6, "The only thing that matters is faith expressing itself in love."

A Different Kind of Christianity
By O. Merce Brown
*****

This is a book about a different kind of Christianity, one based on love and reminiscent of Jesus---authentic and moving---for all of those who are turned off by the religious right and what today passes for the "Good News". It is refreshing and eye-opening to see a secular leftist lesbian experience a radical conversion to Christianity based around feeding others' physical, spiritual and emotional hunger through food pantries. Jesus said "Feed My sheep", and the author does this, and chronicles her journey. She is the kind of Christian I want to be, not hate-based or fear-based or dogma-based, but faithful to the actual Gospel, which is violently at odds with the way faith is sometimes practiced today.

She is Episcopalian, and her sexual identiy as a lesbian (which she retains after her conversion) is peripheral to her story about feeding hungry people. She ministers to "the poor, the weak, the sick and the lonely", and the book chronicles how all this comes about.

This is a great read, one that will make Christians open their eyes, and people of other faiths respect someone who has lived her life in love.

But only this bread...
By A. Buckley
Caveat: I am only on page 79 -- and I promise to revisit this review if my opinion changes as I read -- but I am struggling with this book. This seems less to me a story about finding faith, than one about finding My Extraordinary Church. Miles' conversion took place 20 pages ago, but she doesn't really describe what spiritual change she has had, instead she has spent 20 pages discussing how great her church is: the home-baked bread (not "dead white disks of wafers" but ""dense whole wheat bread" or "sublime brioche"); the architecture, the art, the music, the demographics of the congregants, the structure of the service. I wouldn't be bothered by all this -- except that intrinsic to her whole discussion is that her church is BETTER than other churches. Her church is "lively and not archaic, yet utterly without the cheesiness of 'contemporary' Christianity" -- but what makes a cappella Shaker hymns and Tibetan bells less "cheesy" than soft rock? Or murals of Ella Fitzgerald and Queen Elizabeth I NOT cheesy? It's great Miles has found a church she likes, but this is so far a story about her sense of BELONGING, about finding a church that fits, not about FAITH. And that's the second disappointing thing.

To me, church-shopping is an individual pursuit, and a small topic. I am always more interested in (and mystified by) how people find faith; what brings a person to belief?

I don't think it matters whether your communion is a wafer or home-baked bread; I suspect both can serve the same purpose when shared in the right spirit.

Nowhere near as good as Mary Karr's Lit.

Alfred Dunhill shares his Experience on Smoking
By Rough Customer
This book was published in 1954, is 177 pages long, measures 8.25" x 5.25" x 7/8" thick. Hard board covers and I believe was issued without a dust jacket. Published in NY by Putnam's sons. The book covers all the bases from the history of tobacco, to the history of the match, to tobacco for smoking by pipe, cigar and cigarettes, growing tobacco, cigarette manufacturing and pipe manufacturing. In fact much of the pipe manufacturing information in the book appears to be where Hacker got much of the info in his book The Ultimate Pipe Book. The little 1954 book is a great one and a quick read, will teach you thing you didn't know, and I would recommend it for those interested in pipe smoking.

Nothing original
By KenP
Seemed a collection of data and boring stuff from lots of sources. It is a disjointed effort that lacks any magic about pipes and the accoutrements . The only saving grace for this boring writing is that it is a thin book.

Amazon.com Review
From Emma Bull's War for the Oaks to Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series, from The X-Files to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, creators are mixing old European myths and legends with modern American pop culture. Incorporating influences ranging from blaxploitation movies and erotic novels to tabloid staples like UFOs and Elvis, authors and directors are creating a new mythology for the strip-mall, tract-house, cell-phone America of the new millennium.

One of the best-known and best writers of the new American mythology is Charlaine Harris. Dead to the World is the fourth novel in her Anthony Award-winning Southern Vampire series. It continues the story of psychic waitress Sookie Stackhouse, who has fallen out with her undead lover, Bill. Bill has no sooner departed for Peru, than Sookie finds the head vampire, Eric, running naked and terrified through the rural night. She helps Eric, and discovers his memory has been destroyed by a coven of unscrupulous, astonishingly powerful witches, newly arrived in her small Louisiana town, and offering a huge reward for Eric. Sookie tries to hide Eric, but her brother sees him--and immediately disappears. And Sookie finds herself caught in a war among witches, vampires, and werewolves. --Cynthia Ward

From Publishers Weekly
Fans of Laurell Hamilton's Anita Blake looking for a lighter version of the vampire huntress should cotton to Sookie Stackhouse, a telepathic Louisiana gal who really wants to be normal, but suffers from a huge self-confidence problem, a case of permanent bad luck, difficult relatives and a penchant for attracting unsavory characters of the not-quite-human kind. In this fourth quirky installment in this hitherto mass-market series (after 2003's Club Dead), Sookie finds that her bad luck has taken a new turn for the worse. Sookie's love interest, Bill the vampire, runs off to Peru to do research. In his place, Sookie is stuck with Eric, Bill's boss (and head vamp for the district), who appears out of thin air buck naked with no memory of who he is or what he does. Coincidentally, Sookie's brother Jason goes missing. Less coincidentally, but more ominously, a coven of witches (who also happen to be shape-shifters and vampire blood addicts) comes rolling into the nearest big city, looking for trouble. Consistent, well-built characters and a strong, action-packed plot that will keep readers guessing to the end distinguish this frothy fusion of romance, mystery and fantasy.

From Booklist
Sookie Stackhouse has broken up with Bill, her vampire lover, after he cheated with the vampire who initiated him, but being telepathic, she can't seem to get away from the supernatural. Driving home from work one day, she comes across Bill's sexy boss, Eric, half naked and on the run. When she approaches him, he doesn't remember her or even who he is. She gets him to come back to her house, and a call to his second-in-command, Pam, reveals that Hallow, a witch whose advances Eric spurned, robbed him of his memory. Still hoping to get her hands on him, Hallow is posting signs with his picture on them all over town, so Pam is determined that Eric stay put at Sookie's. Sookie is apprehensive about that, especially after her brother disappears, and she comes to suspect that the coven Hallow runs is responsible. But as her attraction to Eric deepens, Sookie finds she is drawn into the vampires' plot to attack Hallow's coven. The first hardcover in Harris' series is gripping and spicy. Kristine Huntley

Love it.... 100%!!!! The best one so far....
By Crystal Rose
Oh my this book was awesome. I like Bill, but this book made me look at Eric a whole new way. I already can't wait to read the next installment. Sookie really just wants to be "normal". She seems real tired of all the drama that is within her life. She fines out that Bill is going to Peru to do more research for his vampire catalog, and while driving home from work she find Eric running through the woods "lost". She stops to help me and realizes that he has no memory of anything. Pam and Chow find Sookie and Eric and they decide that Eric will stay hidden with Sookie since Witches are looking for him. As Eric is staying with Sookie... he is kinder, sweeter, gentler that ever before. Sookie starts to realize that she likes this side of Eric. It is not long before Sookie and Eric are intimate, which Harris wrote beautiful I might add! Sookie even though is loving being with the nicer Eric and distraught because Jason is missing. No one knows were he is, and everything is trying to help Sookie find him with no avail. Sookie and the Vampire crew decide that they need to go after the Witches and the rest of there clan. The Vampires actually teamed up with the Weres, Wiccans, and the Shifters from Hotshots (these guys are an incest clan of Weres that you later in the book find out are were-panthers) The fight between the Witches and the Vamp, Weres, Shifter and Wiccans was pretty great. Alcide basically banished Debbie from him which was AWESOME, but the is a not a big surprise (awesome but not a big surprise) at the end for about Debbie!! We also meet a Fairy for a short while, she was kind of cool (hopefully she will be in the books again??) The fairy seems to have some type of beauty that the Vampires can't seems to turn away from. As soon as they saw her they wanted to her, though she didn`t want anything to so with them. That was interesting!! Jason is found with the help of the leader were-panther. I can't wait to read more about Jason transformation in the next book. All in all Eric does get his memory back and remembers nothing of the time and caring between himself and Sookie. I really hope that he will sooner or later, because it brought out such a beauty between Erin and Sookie. This book was so great because of those two characters.

I have always like Bill and most likely I will keep likely Bill, but Eric other side was wonderful (Don`t get me wrong, his "bad side" was awesome too but WOW he was fantastic here). Maybe you can think about it as Eric truer side, loving side was revealed in this book. Maybe, maybe not... I don't know but I must keep reading these books and I hope you do too!!

Dual Natured Eric & Sookie Make Sparks Fly!
By Jana L.Perskie
Sookie Stackhouse, the attractive, telepathic barmaid from Bon Temps, LA, makes her fourth appearance in "Dead To The World," which I think is the best book in the series, so far. Boyfriend Bill, a Civil War veteran and vampire, is pretty much out of the picture here. He has been sent to Peru, by the Vampire Queen of Louisiana, to continue his research for the extensive vampire data base he is building. Sookie has ambivalent feelings about her old beau. He has proved to have a cheatin' heart, along with other unfaithful body parts. This is unfortunate because Sookie thought she had found the man of her dreams. However, there seems to be an abundance of other men, all preternatural, who are very interested in getting to know our Sookie better. And it is best for her to stick with the superhumans. She can't read their minds, and doesn't need to worry about keeping their inner voices at bay.

Driving home from work early New Year's morning, (there was a huge party at Merlotte's Bar), Sookie sees a half-naked, shoeless man running down the road. When she stops to help the poor guy, she realizes it is Eric, charismatic owner of Club Fangtasia, and vampire Sheriff of Area 5, which encompasses Shreveport and Bon Temps. It appears that Eric has amnesia, and remembers nothing about his life except that he is a vampire. He doesn't even know why he is running, or where. He is only aware of his terror - a very strange state for the strong, confident warrior he has always been. We learn later from Eric's cohorts that a coven of powerful witches, who use their magic for dark purposes, are attempting to take control of all the supernaturals in Area 5 - vampires, werewolves, shifters, etc.. When Eric refused to cooperate with them, they cast a spell taking away his memory. Sookie brings Eric home to care for him, through sheer kindness. Her brother Jason interferes with her altruism, however, when Eric's second in command visits to figure out an emergency course of action. Eric must remain in hiding and Jason negotiates a whopping $35,000. babysitting fee for his sister. Sookie finds that Eric is no longer the suave, scary, business-first, head-honcho vampire that she had been accustomed to. He is now tender, sincere, attentive, romantic, protective of her and grateful for her loyalty and decency. Our heroine doesn't know what to make of this drastic change, until sparks begin to fly between the two. She then decides to go with the flow. After all, Bill has been gone a long time.

"Dead To The World's" pace is fast and the action is nonstop throughout. Jason goes missing, the evil witches are on the loose, Alcide Herveaux, the hunky werewolf (from "Club Dead"), and his pack become involved in what is to be a major battle between the forces of good and evil, new characters are introduced, and much more. Per usual Charlaine Harris fills her well written narrative with humor, suspense, and thrilling plot twists and turns. The finale is outrageously good! Terrific escapist reading. I couldn't put the novel down.

Exciting

The premise of this series is that vampires have "come out" to the world at large, become legal citizens in many countries, and their effect of living in a small community in the American South. The main character is Sookie Stackhouse, who works as a barmaid and who happens to be telepathic. I won't go over the plot except to say that you can read about it from the PW or Booklist descriptions above.
I loved this book. It's very exciting, tension filled-a real page turner. I've been a fan from the beginning, and I think this may be my favorite in the series so far. Sookie is still her wonderful self, the plotting is fantastic, and I loved the little bits of information planted here and there about certain characters. (There is a certain duo I am really rooting for, conventions be damned!) I liked Bill very much in the first book, but after #2 and #3, I was ready to see Sookie move on. I found the Eric storyline in this book to be charming, and I am glad to see that Sookie herself seems to have seen it as nothing more than a temporary comfort. Having the field wide open at this point leaves many interesting possibilities for the future! And here's hoping none of them get poor Sookie beaten up again.
The only thing that gives me pause is the inevitable comparison to Laurell K. Hamilton. I have bristled at the Anita Blake comparisons since the first Sookie book came out, but even I will admit it may be getting a bit too close for comfort with the introduction of certain characters and plot devices. I've read all the Anita Blakes but the last two, as I just got bored with the lack of plot while Anita becomes ever more tiresome. With that in mind, I must admit that I laughed out loud when Sookie asks Alcide if one becomes a werewolf packmaster by fighting for the title and he replies that no, one gets elected.
