an interesting artifact
By Noah Raymond Levey
here is a perfect intro to some of the lighter mental aspects of the man known as R. Buckminster Fuller. keep in mind that this book was co-written by Quentin Fiore, so it is not entirely the work of Fuller. I first saw it about 10 years ago and was enamored with it's humor, astuteness, and positive charm. it is very much a period piece, but it is no less interesting now than when it was published. from a design standpoint it is mindblowing...the pages are divided in half longitudinally by two lines of type, one right side up( the top line), and one upside-down. the rest of the upper half of the page is filled with blurbs, clip art and the like. the bottom half is the same, but upside down. the book can be read to the end and flipped, so that the second half that was upside down can be read. also, you can stop at any point and flip the book again and continue. in a way, this book contains the means to keep reading the same book indefinitely, and creates a microcosmic litte universe all it's own. the subject matter is all over the place, but mostly deals with the realities and absurdities of then-modern life. many deep, serious subjects are approached here, as well as banalities of pop culture. it is all done in a way that expresses a raised-eybrow idealisim that is quite magnetizing. I may mention that the artwork/layout is quite good as well, and it's easy to see where other collage artists like Winston Smith got some of their ideas from. to my knowledge this is the only book of it's kind. a good, fun read for someone who wants something a little left field, or someone who wants a non-traditional intro to Mr. Fuller.

I seem to be a verb
By Mhister
There is no such thing as a bad Buckminster Fuller book. It's all in this quote . . . "I know that I am not a category. I am not a thing--a noun . . . I seem to be a verb, an evolutionary process--an integral function of the universe.".

I would advise taking any opportunity to increase your exposure to one of the more compelling "Think Different" people of the last century.

I Seem To Be A Verb
By E. Marie Butler
I Seem To Be A Verb is one of if not the most important book I have ever read. The author's perspective about my inner self gave me a new outlook on life at a time when I really needed it. I recommend this book for anyone who takes themselves too seriously, or is immature, or needs a new outlook on life. It sure helped me.

Africana Studies: A Disciplinary Quest for Both Theory and MethodFrom McFarland & Company

Known variously as African studies, black studies, African American studies, Afro-American studies, and Africology, the academic study of the African diaspora as a holistic discipline is a relatively new phenomenon. University programs have been created with reference to a disciplinary matrix, retarding the development of appropriate theory and methods throughout Africana studies. Fifteen leaders in the field of Africana studies provide the conceptual framework for establishing the field as a mature discipline. The focus is on four basic areas: administration and organizational structure; disciplinary matrix; Africana womanism; and cultural aesthetics. The work examines both the theory and the method of scholars in African and African-diaspora studies.

The Tragedy of the Middle East, by Barry Rubin

The Middle East has changed clearly, substantially, and dramatically during the last decade. Yet scholarly and public understanding lags far behind recent events. Barry Rubin's historical and political summation of the region shows how events and ideas have both shaped and altered its character. Three interlinked themes are crucial to the book. First, a reinterpretation of the era of recent upheaval the Middle East has just passed through, which the author calls the Era of Radical Expectations. During that period, many Arabs believed that some leader, country, or radical movement would unite the region, solving all its problems. Second, an evaluation of how the historical experience of the period between the 1940s and the 1990s undermined the old system, making change necessary. Third, an analysis of the region today that explains future developments, in what the author terms the Era of Reluctant Pragmatism, as the Middle Eastern societies determine their relationships to the West. Barry Rubin is Director of the Global Research in International Affairs (GLORIA) Center of the Interdisciplinary Center in Herziliya, Israel, and editor of the Middle East Review of International Affairs. He is the author of 16 books on the Middle East and has edited another 17 that include the widely reviewed and acclaimed The Transformation of Palestinian Politics (Harvard, 1999) and The Israel-Arab Reader (Penguin/Putnam, 2002)

From Publishers Weekly
For a brief period in the 1990s, peace in the Middle East seemed possible. Now that that's over, Rubin seeks to explain what went wrong. In his sixteenth book on the region, he argues that Arab leaders balked at peace because it presented too great a threat to their own power. Blaming external enemies Israel and the United States has long enabled Arab regimes to channel frustration away from their own failures, Rubin writes, and governments across the region reverted to this strategy when peace seemed likely to break out. This is not the first time that Rubin, who is the editor of the Middle East Review of International Affairs, has carefully summed up very recent events. His widely acclaimed 1999 book, The Transformation of Palestinian Politics: From Revolution to State-Building, analyzed the inner workings of the Palestinian Authority. But while the tone of that book was cautiously hopeful, in his new work he sees no realistic path to a brighter future. This is a dense but well-argued read, and timely, too, as Westerners seek an explanation for why most if not all of the September 11th hijackers hail from U.S. allies Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

Review
"Barry Rubin has written an important, spirited, mature meditation on the historical baggage of the modern Middle East. It asks the right questions abaut what ails modern Middle East societies. It has sweep and thoroughness. It is not severe in tone, more resigned than judgmental... I find in it a fine balance between concrete, specific data and wider theoretical concerns about politics and culture. Dr. Rubin is a prolific author with wide experience, and this book draws on the work and judgment of a seasoned scholar. Free of jargon, written with considerable clarity and force, this book will earn its place and make its way in the current debate about the ordeal of modernity in that tormented region. Its chapters on anti-Americanism and the 'uncivil society' are quite smart and go against the conventional wisdom. This is an engaging book by an engaged author who really cares about his material and his subject." Fouad Ajami, The John Hopkins University

"Powerfully persuasive. All academic libraries and large public libraries should quickly add this cogent, troubling and inexpensive monograph to their collections." Catholic Library World

"The Tragedy of the Middle East could be the political book most hated by Arabs since Rafael Patai's The Arab Mind in 1973...the book is a powerful one." The Washington Post

"Drawing on his decades of researching the region and his 18 earlier books, Rubin has produced a magisterial overview of the contemporary Middle East. Highly recommended." Choice

Good Intro to the Mess that is the Modern Middle East
By Kirk H Sowell
Rubin is a specialist in contemporary Middle Eastern politics and terrorism. After an overview that provides some historical background and general explanations for the region's problems backed up by examples (the first 70 pages), there are three chapters devoted to Iraq, Syria and Iran, respectively, and then four chapters dealing with state-sponsored terrorism, the struggle within Islam, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and U.S. foreign policy.

Rubin's analysis contains a good number of insights that make this book more than worth reading. For example, Rubin argues that the ideology of Arab nationalism (or Arabism), historically a rallying cry of Arab unity and strength since the 1950s, has actually been a major source of violence and instability. This is because it has been repeatedly used to justify domestic repression and violent intervention in the affairs of other states. Rubin asks the reader to imagine how much worse Latin America's problems would be if Spanish-speaking countries were constantly plotting against one another, trying to form a region-wide power base. I would put it this way: imagine if Mexico, rather than focusing on its own economic development, were to persue a political union with Columbia, invade Ecuador, and sponsor a coup in Argentina. The region would like more like the Arab world.

My major disagreement with Rubin is that he clearly believes in the popular theory that Arab anti-Americanism (and anti-Semitism/hatred of Israel) is essentially the result of goverment-controlled media fanning the flames of popular passion in order to divert attention away from the failures of Arab governments. There are indeed many examples of this, but it has two flaws. First, this theory does not explain similar responses prior to the rise of modern state media. For example, how to explain the violently anti-British response of Arab populations in the 1920s which had tolerated Ottoman rule for 400 years, when the Britains were no more repressive than the Ottomans and improved material conditions? Second, this theory doesn't explain why independent Muslim media sources tend to be as, if not more, anti-American and pro-terrorist than official media. Rubin analyzes Al-Jazeera, which is quasi-independent, but does not explain how so many independent sources, including educated Arabs living in the West, hold views like those expressed by official Arab media.

The underlying source of the regions' passions must lie elsewhere, and I would point to two. The first is the political psychology of Islam, which makes any non-Muslim power in the Middle East unpopular, however beneficial it might be. The second is the general tendency of all peoples, Muslim or otherwise, to resent the rise of a dominant power from another culture. This is especially true for a people like the Arabs, who have a long and proud historical memory of powerful Arab and Islamic empires (i.e. the Abbasids). The theory that region's anti-Americanism results from bad goverments is conforting because it suggests a (relatively) easy solution - get rid of the governments. But if the problem has to do with underlying culture, then you have a much greater problem, and we do.

The fact that the book has Saddam Hussein on the cover makes it appear somewhat anachronistic, but all of the problems and issues that Rubin addresses are still there, and I don't have a problem recommending it.

An excellent book about the modern Middle East
By Jill Malter
Rubin makes some excellent points in this book.

One topic he addresses is the failure of the Camp David peace talks between Israel, led by Barak, and Arafat. Some people think the talks failed because the Arabs refused to offer peace. Some think they failed because the Israelis failed to make any serious concessions to achieve peace. I happen to think that they failed for two reasons: the Israelis were never offered the only thing they wanted, namely peace, and the Arabs were offered land and a state, neither of which they actually wanted.

Rubin disagrees with all these ideas. He states that the immediate problem was that a settlement was indeed close. And it was the threat of peace that scared the Arab side. Peace might destabilize Arab regimes. And given that Arab leaders had spent years crafting an extremist public opinion, they now chose to let that public opinion scuttle negotiations. I think this is an interesting possibility.

The author also reminds us that "terrorism is not a weapon of the poor or oppressed but a carefully thought out revolutionary tactic."

Rubin quotes a couple of Arabs who say that from a practical standpoint, Arabs would be better off making peace. After all, it is unlikely that the more extreme Arabs will achieve all their demands, some of which are quite unreasonable. And they are ignoring the balance of forces. But Rubin explains that in this situation, Arabs are indeed ignoring the balace of forces.

I would go further than that. First, I would note that part of the Arab demands happen to be to deprive Jews and others of rights to life, liberty, and property. Such demands are arbitrary. Next, I would note that Arab demands happen to include the theft of Levantine land from the land-poor. Even if these demands are met now, in the long run, non-Arabs will almost surely buy even more Levantine land than they now have, and keep it. And finally, I do agree with the implication that anti-peace Arabs are regarding war as something desirable in and of itself, even if the balance of forces is very poor.

The author quotes a poll taken by al-Jazeera in 2001 which asked which was worse, Zionism or Nazism. I found this interesting. You see, I regard Zionism, which is simply Jewish nationalism, as the application of human rights for everyone, including Jews. Given that I support human rights, I support Zionism. And I regard Nazism as opposition to human rights. But how would the majority of Arabs see it? Many of them supported the Nazis. And many are against human rights for themselves, against human rights for Women, against human rights for minorities, and against Jewish rights in particular. Obviously, quite a few Arabs oppose human rights, and might well like Nazism and dislike Zionism.

Anyway, the poll came out with 84.6% preferring Nazism (saying Zionism was worse than Nazism), 2.7% preferring Zionism, and 11.1% regarding them equally "bad." I guess the rest had no opinion.

Rubin concludes that the tendency towards anti-American politics in Arab lands is hurting Arab people in general. So are anti-Western, anti-American, and anti-Israeli lies. And those who purport to champion the "Arab Cause" are in fact adding to Arab misery.

Extremely Useful in Providing Context for ME Conflicts
By N. Fowler
Contrary to the previous reader review, I found the book extremely useful in providing a context for understanding the current ME conflicts. Clearly, when individuals harbor the feelings of the previous reviewer, we in America who believe in the continuation of our democracy need to be reading as much as we can that will enlighten us to what fuels the hatred of democracy and the United States.

Being in Love: How to Love with Awareness and Relate Without Fear, by Osho

What Is Love?

In this thoughtful, provocative work, Osho—one of the most revolutionary thinkers of our time—challenges us to question what we think we know about love and opens us to the possibility of a love that is natural, fulfilling, and free of possessiveness and jealousy.

With his characteristic wit, humor, and understanding, Osho dares us to resist the unhealthy relationship patterns we’ve learned from those around us, and to rediscover the meaning of love for ourselves. “By the time you are ready to explore the world of love, you are filled with so much rubbish about love that there is not much hope for you to be able to find the authentic and discard the false.”

By answering the questions that so many lovers face, Osho shares new ways to love that will forever change how you relate to others, including how to:

• Love without clinging
• Let go of expectations, rules, and demands
• Free yourself from the fear of being alone
• Be fully present in your relationships
• Keep your love fresh and alive
• Become a life partner with whom someone could continue to grow and change
• Surrender your ego so you can surrender to love

Being in Love will inspire you to welcome love into your life anew and experience the joy of being truly alive by sharing it.

BEYOND DEPENDENCY

AND DOMINATION

Breaking Out of the Shell of the Ego

I have been always surprised by the number of people who come to me and say they are afraid of love. What is the fear of love? It is because when you really love somebody your ego starts slipping away and melting. You cannot love with the ego; the ego becomes a barrier, and when you want to drop the barrier between yourself and the other, the ego says, "This is going to be a death. Beware!"

The death of the ego is not your death; the death of the ego is really your possibility of life. The ego is just a dead crust around you, it has to be broken and thrown away. It comes into being naturally--just as a traveler collects dust on his clothes, on his body, and he has to take a bath to get rid of the dust. As we move through time, the dust of our experiences, our knowledge, of the life we have lived, of the past, collects. That dust becomes the ego. It accumulates and becomes a crust around you, which has to be broken and thrown away. One has to take a bath every day, in fact every moment, so that this crust never becomes a prison.

It will be helpful to understand where the ego comes from, to understand the roots.

A child is born and is absolutely helpless, particularly the human child. He cannot survive without others' help. Most children of the animals, the trees, the birds, can survive without the parents, can survive without a society, without a family. Even if sometimes help is needed, it is very little--a few days, at the most a few months. But a human child is so helpless that he has to depend on others for years. It is there that the root has to be sought.

Why does helplessness create the human ego? The child is helpless, he depends on others, but the ignorant mind of the child interprets this dependence as if he is the center of the whole world. The child thinks, "Whenever I cry, my mother runs immediately; whenever I am hungry, I just have to give an indication and the breast is given. Whenever I am wet, just a slight cry and somebody comes and changes my clothes." The child lives like an emperor. In fact he is absolutely helpless and dependent, and the mother and father, the family and his caretakers, are all helping him to survive. They are not dependent on the child, the child is dependent on them. But the mind of the child interprets this as if he is the center of the whole world, as if the whole world exists just for him.

And the world of the child is, of course, very small in the beginning. It consists of the mother, the caretaker, the father on the fringe--this is the child's whole world. These people love the child. And the child becomes more and more egoistic. He feels himself to be the very center of all existence, and in that way the ego is created. Through dependence and helplessness, the ego is created.

In fact the child's real situation is just the contrary from what he thinks; there is no real justification to create such an ego. But the child is absolutely ignorant, he is not capable of understanding the complexity of the thing. He cannot know that he is helpless, he thinks he is the dictator! And then for his whole life he will try to remain the dictator. He will become a Napoleon, an Alexander, an Adolf Hitler--your presidents, prime ministers, dictators, are all childish. They are trying to achieve the same thing they experienced as children; they want to be the center of the whole existence. With them the world should live and die; the whole world is their periphery and they are the center of it; the very meaning of life is hidden in them.

The child, of course, naturally finds this interpretation correct, because when the mother looks at him, in the eyes of the mother he sees that he is the significance of her life. When the father comes home, the child feels that he is the very meaning of the father's life. This lasts for three or four years--and the years at the beginning of life are the most important; never again will there be a time in a person's life with the same potential.

Psychologists say that after the first four years the child is almost complete. The whole pattern is fixed; throughout the rest of life you will repeat the same pattern in different situations. And by the seventh year the child has all his attitudes confirmed, his ego is settled. Now he moves out into the world--and then everywhere he encounters problems, millions of problems! Once you are out of the circle of the family, problems will arise--because nobody else bothers about you in the same way your mother bothered about you; nobody is as concerned about you as your father was. Instead, everywhere you find indifference, and the ego is hurt.

But now the pattern is set. Whether it hurts or not, the child cannot change the pattern--it has become the very blueprint of his being. He will play with other children and try to dominate them. He will go to school and try to dominate, to come first in his class, to become the most important student. He might believe he is superior but he finds that all the other children believe the same way. There is conflict, there are egos, there is fighting, struggle.

Then this becomes the whole story of life: there are millions of egos around you, just like yours, and everybody is trying to control, maneuver, dominate--through wealth, power, politics, knowledge, strength, lies, pretensions, hypocrisies. Even in religion and morality, everybody is trying to dominate, to show the rest of the world that "I am the center of the world."

This is the root of all problems between people. Because of this concept, you are always in conflict and struggle with somebody or other. Not that others are enemies to you--everybody else is just like you, in the same boat. The situation is the same for everybody else; they have been brought up in the same way.

There exists a certain school of psychoanalysts in the West who have proposed that unless children are brought up without their fathers and mothers, the world will never be at peace. I don't support them, because then children will never be brought up in any way! Those psychologists have something of truth in their proposal, but it is a very dangerous idea. Because if children are brought up in nurseries without fathers and mothers, without any love, with total indifference, they may not have the problems of the ego but they will have other, even more damaging and dangerous problems.

If a child is brought up in total indifference he will have no center. He will be a hotchpotch, clumsy, not knowing who he is. He will not have any identity. Afraid, scared, he will not be able to take even a single step without fear, because nobody has loved him. Of course, the ego will not be there, but without it he will have no center. He will not become a buddha; he will be just dull and crippled, always feeling afraid.

Love is needed to make you feel fearless, to make you feel that you are accepted, that you are not useless, that you cannot be discarded in the junkyard. If children are brought up in a situation where love is lacking, they will not have egos, that's true. Their life will not have so much struggle and fight. But they will not be able to stand up for themselves at all. They will be always in flight, escaping from everybody, hiding in caves in their own being. They will not be buddhas, they will not be radiant with vitality, they will not be centered, at ease, at home. They will simply be eccentric, off-center. That will not be a good situation either.

So I don't support these psychologists. Their approach would create robots, not human beings--and robots of course have no problems. Or, they may create human beings who are more like animals. There will be less anxiety, less ulcers, less cancer, but that is not worth achieving when it means that you cannot grow to a higher peak of consciousness. Instead you would be falling downward; it will be a regression. Of course, if you become an animal there will be less anguish, because there will be less consciousness. And if you become a stone, a rock, there will be no anxiety at all because there is nobody inside to feel anxious, to feel anguish. But this is not worth achieving. One has to be like a god, not like a rock. And by that I mean it to have absolute consciousness and still have no worries, no anxieties, no problems; to enjoy life like the birds, to celebrate life like birds, to sing like birds--not through regression but by growing to the optimum of consciousness.

The child gathers ego--it is natural, nothing can be done about it. One has to accept it. But later on, there is no need to keep carrying it. That ego is needed in the beginning for the child to feel that he is accepted, loved, welcomed--that he is an invited guest, not an accident. The father, the mother, the family, and the warmth around the child help him to grow strong, rooted, grounded. It is needed, the ego gives him protection--it is good, it is just like the shell of a seed. But the shell should not become the ultimate thing, otherwise the seed will die. The protection can go on too long, then it becomes a prison. The protection must remain a protection while it is needed, and when the moment comes for the hard shell of the seed to die into the earth, it should die naturally so that the seed can sprout and life can be born.

The ego is just a protective shell--the child needs it because he is helpless. The child needs it because he is weak; the child needs it because he is vulnerable and there are millions of forces all around. He needs protection, a home, a base. The whole world may be indifferent but he can always look toward home, and from there he can gather significance.

But, with significance comes the ego. The child becomes egoistic, and with this ego arise all the problems you face. This ego will not allow you to fall in love. This ego would like everybody to surrender to you; it will not allow you to surrender to anybody--and love happens only when you surrender. When you force somebody else to surrender it is hateful, destructive. It is not love. And if there is no love, your life will be without warmth, without any poetry in it. It may be prose, mathematical, logical, rational. But how can one live without poetry?

Prose is okay, rationality is okay, it is utilitarian, needed--but living just through reason and logic can never be a celebration, can never be festive. And when life is not festive, it is boring. Poetry is needed--but for poetry you need surrender. You need to throw off this ego. If you can do it, if you can put it aside even for a few moments, your life will have glimpses of the beautiful, of the divine.

Without poetry you cannot really live, you can only exist. Love is poetry. And if love is not possible, how can you be prayerful, meditative, aware? It becomes almost impossible. And without a meditative awareness, you will remain just a body; you will never become aware of the innermost soul. Only in prayerfulness, in a deep meditation and silence do you reach the peaks. That prayerful silence, that meditative awareness is the highest peak of experience--but love opens the door.

Carl Gustav Jung, after a lifetime of studying thousands of people--thousands of cases of people who were ill, psychologically crippled, psychologically confused--said that he had never come across a psychologically ill person whose real problem after the fortieth year is not spiritual. There is a rhythm in life, and in your forties a new dimension arises, the spiritual dimension. If you cannot tackle it rightly, if you don't know what to do, you will become ill, you will become restless. The whole of human growth is a continuity. If you miss one step, it becomes discontinuous. The child gathers ego--and if he never learns to put the ego aside he cannot love, cannot be at ease with anybody. The ego will be constantly in fight. You may be sitting silently, but the ego is constantly fighting, just looking out for ways to dominate, to be dictatorial, to become the ruler of the world.

This creates problems everywhere. In friendship, sex, love, in the society--everywhere you are in conflict. There is even conflict with the parents who have given this ego to you. It is rare that a son forgives his father, rare that a woman forgives her mother. It happens very rarely.

George Gurdjieff had a sentence on the wall of the room where he used to meet with people. The sentence was this: "If you are not yet at ease with your father and mother, then go away. I cannot help you." Why? Because the problem has arisen there and it has to be solved there. That's why all the old traditions say love your parents, respect your parents as deeply as possible--because the ego arises there, that is the soil. Solve it there, otherwise it will haunt you everywhere.

Psychoanalysts have also come to the conclusion that all they do is bring you back to the problems that existed between you and your parents and try to solve them somehow. If you can solve your conflict with your parents, many other conflicts will simply disappear because they are based on the same fundamental conflict.

For example, a man who is not at ease with his father cannot be at ease with the boss in the office--never, because the boss is a father figure. That small conflict with your parents continues to be reflected in all your relationships. If you are not at ease with your mother, you cannot be at ease with your wife because she will be the representative woman; you cannot be at ease with women as such, because your mother is the first woman, she is the first model of a woman. Wherever a woman is, your mother is, and a subtle relationship continues.

Ego is born in the relationship with the father and mother, and it has to be tackled there. Otherwise you will go on cutting branches and leaves of the tree, and the root remains untouched.

A great book that will change your perspective of love as a whole!
By Hector Gonzalez
To clear things up a little I will begin by stating that this isn't a proper book or rather this book was not originated as such; this is a collection or rather a transcription of speeches and interviews given by OSHO arranged together to give shape to this book (A fact a little note lets you know at the end of the book).

The statement above is by no means a critique, since overall, the content of each chapter usually flowed nicely into the next, that is until the book switches the format a little and whole chapters are dedicated to answering couple's questions (remember this is a recollection of speeches and interviews OSHO had), from there on the rhythm struggles a little in comparison to previous chapters, since some of the questions are greatly different one from another.

Other than that, this is a great book, it's content filled with eye opening wisdom in all things love. This was my first OSHO book and having enjoyed it so much it won't be my last.

I came to this book on a hard time in my life, having read many books on relationships and counseling I switched topics, perhaps searching for a book about the whole concept on love in general would suit me best.

Turns out it did, not only did it help me let go of the past and heal, OSHO's rather unique views on love and relationships changed how I viewed and approached people in general, it helped me to let go and let thing be, I learned about love and realized how ignorant I was regarding this concept, how incomplete my vision and idea of love were. I feel like I gained a lot from reading this book and I whole heartedly recommend it to anyone. Really, everyone should read this book at least once, it is filled with such wisdom it will change your life at least a little, in my case it helped me out of a bad case of heart break and as stated gave me a whole new vision of love.

I do have to say though, some of OSHO's ideas (a few mind you) seemed a little radical to me, and I won't follow suit with them. However I found many ideas I literally felt in love with. My advice when reading a book that contains some controversial ideas (again very few in my opinion) is to take all the positive ideas you find and merge them with your way of thinking, take the best of both worlds and you will logically become a better person.

Best book on pure love
By Alexander Moghadam
Although sometimes this text gets confusing, I highly recommend it as a poetic and spiritual treatise on pure and unfiltered love. Each page is true in its highest sense and as a result I would regard my own shortcomings to the four star rating. It's very advanced language can confuse others who do not possess the ability to discern or even discard discernment. It is a very powerful truth spoken in Osho's book. I reccomend it to those who wish to discover deeper reality with a lover or solve a riddle in their relationship. I am sure there is an answer somewhere in the book for this.

Great book
By Hansderma
It gave me a lot of new awareness and distinctions about my feelings, emotions and thoughts. I think this book is really great for anyone hence only a few understands the real meaning of love.

I found out that some of what people describe about him are not something i would agree with but we never really know what he really meant without knowing the whole context. Yet his books have a lot of wisdom.

Wheelock's Latin 7th Edition (The Wheelock's Latin Series), by Richard A. LaFleur

For nearly sixty years, Wheelock's Latin has remained the optimus liber of beginning Latin textbooks.

When Professor Frederic M. Wheelock's Latin first appeared in 1956, the reviews extolled its thoroughness, organization, and conciseness; one reviewer predicted that the book "might well become the standard text" for introducing students to elementary Latin. Now, nearly six decades later, that prediction has certainly proved accurate.

This new edition of Wheelock's Latin has all of the features, many of them improved and expanded, that have made it the bestselling single-volume beginning Latin textbook:

  • 40 chapters with grammatical explanations and readings drawn from the works of Rome's major prose and verse writers;
  • Self-tutorial exercises, each with an answer key, for independent study;
  • An extensive English–Latin/Latin–English vocabulary section;
  • A rich selection of original Latin readings—unlike other Latin textbooks, which contain primarily made-up texts;
  • Etymological aids, maps, and dozens of images illustrating aspects of the classical culture and mythology presented in the chapter readings.

Also included are expanded notes on the literary passages, comments on vocabulary, and translation tips; new comprehension and discussion questions; and new authentic classical Latin readings, including Roman graffiti, in every chapter.

Also included are expanded notes on the literary passages, comments on vocabulary, and translation tips; new comprehension and discussion questions; and new authentic classical Latin readings, including Roman graffiti, in every chapter.

An even more attractive edition of Wheelock ... supplementary readings still required!
By Michael R., "I, Demens"
Wheelock is an excellent textbook in many ways, and this new edition makes it more attractive than ever (load of new photos, comprehension questions to accompany the readings, etc.) As before, the presentation of the grammar is clear and well-organized, and there are lots of great ancillaries to help you get through the book. By far its biggest draw-back, however, has not been ameliorated: the lack of reading passages of any significant length. This means that the course, while teaching the grammar and syntax quite nicely, does not develop proficiency in reading Latin as much as it should. Students who finish Wheelock often have great difficulty making the transition to reading actual Latin texts (if the assignments are of any significant length). To avoid this, a student learning from Wheelock (or really any traditional "grammar-translation" method) should supplement his or her studies with extended reading passages as soon as possible (certainly from the latter half of Wheelock to the end).

It isn't necessarily easy to find a decent amount of reading material suited to this purpose, but it seems to be getting easier: there has been something of an explosion in this genre in recent years. One choice for more significant supplementary readings might be War with Hannibal: Authentic Latin Prose for the Beginning Student. It presents a considerable amount of a real Latin (enough to get you acquainted with reading Latin prose, yet not so much that you can't finish the book), and includes helpful notes geared toward the beginning student. Of course there's also the beautiful new reader by Prof. LaFleur, Scribblers, Sculptors, and Scribes: A Companion to Wheelock's Latin and Other Introductory Textbooks. Another possibility -- if you are brave -- is Augustus' Res Gestae. Res Gestae Divi Augusti (Greek Commentaries Series) is quite inexpensive (though the notes could be a bit more thorough for the beginning student). You could also try reading some of the graded passages in Reading Latin: Text (say starting with the adapted Cicero about half way through the book). I myself am not crazy about 38 Latin Stories Designed to Accompany Frederic M. Wheelock's Latin (Latin Edition) (the Latin -- even from the latter half of the book -- feels too Anglicized). Many people like it though, and the main point is to read!

In any case, this lovely new edition of Wheelock not withstanding, you really *must* supplement the textbook with as much reading as possible. It really is the only way to become a fluent reader (and feel prepared to some degree when you finish your textbook and begin to read real Latin texts). Exercises and discrete sentences are fine, but they are no substitute for reading, reading, reading!

Don't Get The Kindle Version
By Samantha M. Toffolo
The textbook seems to be, so far, comprehensible and well-written, but I would not recommend the kindle edition. The charts, diagrams and other inserts are completely illegible on my kindle. For the price, you should definitely stick to the paperback version.

New Edition Is Too Cumbersome and Too Much
By M. Morrison
As a university and private Latin teacher who has used Wheelock for many years, I have to admit to being somewhat disappointed with the new Seventh Edition (2011). My basic complaint is that it is too cumbersome and too much.

The original Wheelock's Latin, published by Barnes & Noble, had a little over 200 pages. The Seventh Edition (2011) has almost 600 pages! Moreover, the physical size of the book has been greatly increased, from a large paperback (13 cm wide by 20.5 cm wide by 2 cm thick) to a workbook size (18.5 cm wide by 23 cm high by 3.5 cm thick). Starting with the Fifth Edition (1995), the new editor, Richard LaFleur, and the new publisher, HarperCollins, seem to have forgotten Callimichus's classical aphorism: "mega biblion, mega kakon," a big book is a big evil!

No longer can one attempt to carry this book like a somewhat-oversized paperback. The new material, particularly the extra continuous classical Latin passages, supplementing Wheelock's traditional 40 chapters is mostly useful, but if the basic content was to be expanded, the latter half of the book should have been reserved for a second, separate volume. The idea that one book can fit all needs is not practical.

It is obvious that the Seventh Edition has increased "white space": large margins and wide space between lines. However, I have never known a student who uses the margins for notes. The end result for the Seventh Edition is an overly cumbersome book. The size of the book could have been reduced, and the typeface, which is something like an eye-straining 10 points, could have been increased to at least 11 points.

The Seventh Edition includes additional exercises and continuous passages, and LaFleur admits in a preface that there are now so many that not all of them can be assigned. So, what's the point? A more cumbersome, more expensive book? Economy, selecting the best examples, would have been preferable. Again, LaFleur seems to have forgotten another classical aphorism, "ou polla, alla poly," not quantity, but quality.

Particularly inappropriate is the inclusion in each of the forty chapters of Latin graffiti. This is entirely out of place in a basic Latin course, when students are struggling to understand basic concepts of subject and verb and parts of speech. The inclusion of graffiti is just confusing scattershot.

If a student can overcome the deficiencies of the Seventh Edition, there is much good still left in the basic Wheelock. This book remains probably the best single volume still, but it could have been made better by being left basically intact with only a light editorial touch. Frederic Wheelock seemed to understand exactly what students needed; that is what has made his book a classic of Latin instruction. LaFleur doesn't seem to have that same insight. Latin does not need to be "updated." Its principles are immemorial. For individual study, one might be well advised to look on used book sites for editions earlier than the Fifth.

Therapists often face the dilemma of determining the most effective intervention for treating the specific needs of pediatric clients. This insightful, 175-page professional resource will show the clinician how to use a combined approach of NDT and SI therapy to best meet children's special needs. The text-written by Erna I. Blanche, M.A., OTR; Tina M. Botticelli, M.S., PT; and Mary K. Hallway, OTR-contains an extensive discussion of NDT and SI. The authors wrote this book because combining these two of the most utilized pediatric treatment approaches had become second-nature to them. Therapists will discover detailed assessment guidelines to help them determine when a combined approach is most useful. This book includes reproducible checklists for the clinician to use to evaluate clients' sensory and movement disorders. Case studies also are included to demonstrate the effectiveness of using a combined approach to remediation. Additionally, the therapist will find chapters that describe how to use the combined approach to treat children with specific disorders, including:

A must reading for all those involved in develop.ped.therap.
By Zontas
An excellent text presenting two of the most popular therapeutic paradigms in the contemporary developmental pediatric therapies, the NDT and the SI approach. Based on a sound scientific background the authors present an eclectic and holistic approach (a combination of the above paradigms) to the treatment of cerebral palsy, autism & fragile X, down syndrome etc. Along with Lois Bly's and Jean Ayre's books a MUST READING for all those involved in developmental pediatric therapies.

Excellent resource tool for OT working in private practice!
By Carrie
Working in a private practice clinic with heavy use of sensory integration techniques, this book was an excellent adjunct to many of the motor impairments and movement-based concerns I have with many of my kiddos. The combination of NDT and SI seemed to "fill in the gaps" of many of my unanswered questions from therapy sessions. Highly recommend for the OT in a clinic setting!

Mahabharata: A Modern Retelling, by Carole Satyamurti

“Astonishing. . . . [Satyamurti’s Mahabharata] brings [the] past alive . . . as though it were a novel in finely crafted verse.”—Vinay Dharwadker

Originally composed approximately two thousand years ago, the Mahabharata tells the story of a royal dynasty, descended from gods, whose feud over their kingdom results in a devastating war. But it contains much more than conflict. An epic masterpiece of huge sweep and magisterial power, “a hundred times more interesting” than the Iliad and the Odyssey, writes Wendy Doniger in the introduction, the Mahabharata is a timeless work that evokes a world of myth, passion, and warfare while exploring eternal questions of duty, love, and spiritual freedom. A seminal Hindu text, which includes the Bhagavad Gita, it is also one of the most important and influential works in the history of world civilization.

Innovatively composed in blank verse rather than prose, Carole Satyamurti’s English retelling covers all eighteen books of the Mahabharata. This new version masterfully captures the beauty, excitement, and profundity of the original Sanskrit poem as well as its magnificent architecture and extraordinary scope.

Review
“A remarkable achievement.” (The New Statesman)

“An exquisitely crafted reminder of the power of the Mahabharata: how riveting a read it is, and how relevant it remains to our times.” (Manil Suri)

“A gift to be grateful for. It gives us, as all poetry should, access into a world we did not know or did not know well enough and which henceforth we will visit again and again.” (David Constantine)

“A spellbinding reading experience and a magisterial achievement.” (Eva Hoffman)

“Like the Iliad, the Mahabharata has everything: love, war, family, gods, all the beauty and horror of life. I hope Carole Satyamurti’s compelling version will introduce this marvelous epic, still largely unknown in the west, to a whole generation of new readers.” (Katha Pollitt)

“A kind of miracle: a talented English poet has brought alive in blank verse an ancient Sanskrit epic for the contemporary ear and in a language that does not draw attention to itself but captures the weft and warp of the original thrilling tale, including its moral complexity.” (Gurcharan Das)

“[A] bold and masterful retelling . . . Satyamurti’s version flows with exhilarating clarity and momentum.” (Donna Seaman - Booklist)

PEERING INTO KRISHNA'S MOUTH.
By Glenn J. Shea
“What is found here is also found elsewhere; but what is not here is not found elsewhere.” Because of its extraordinary length—the longest known epic poem in world literature, breaking the tape in its current full translation at just under 6,000 pages—the Mahabharata has always been problematic for English readers. The central kernel of plot—the rivalry of the Kourava clan for the Pandavas, leading to the huge, life-engulfing Kurukshetra war—became, during the long period of its composition (roughly, 300 BCE to 300 CE), the backdrop for a vast variety of subplots, side tales, who-was-there recitations, genealogical listings (much like the Old Testament’s tangle of begats), practical advice on governing and, most centrally, innumerable disquisitions on the rights and wrongs of things. Unlike its companion work, the Ramayana, the Mahabharata is not just an epic but a dharma text, a work of moral instruction, and one in which, more often than not, the best choice available to its characters in any situation is the lesser of two distinct evils. And its scale is part of its message. In the Iliad, the scenes of violence tend to be man to man, warrior to warrior, but the battles in the Mahabharata are enormous, cataclysmic; the imagination-stretching numbers of the battlefield dead are part of its message of the pyrrhic nature of military victory.
The text reached a size where pieces of it began to peel off and be read separately: the Bhagavad Gita, of course, to be read eventually by many Western readers who have little idea of its connection to the original epic, or the moving story of Nala and Damayanti, a redemptive version of the disastrous wagering that causes the Pandavas to be cheated of their kingdom, or the story of Sakuntala, which became the substance of a play by Kalidasa, one of the great pieces of the Indian repertory. The Mahabharata, touch it where you will, is the literary analogy of those Indian temples so elaborately, bewilderingly covered with sculptures that the mind boggles—and which in turn analogize the vastness of India itself. There have been decently readable earlier one-volume abridgments of the work, by William Buck, C. V. Narasimhan and Chakravarthi Rajagopalahari among many others, but they were workmanlike rather than inspired, and all of them erred in the direction of whittling the tale down to its central plot, with none of the curlicues and digressions surviving. But W. W. Norton has now published (2015) THE MAHABHARATA: A Modern Retelling, by Carole Satyamurti, 850 pages of blank verse, and a genuine astonishment and success. Working from older translations, Satyamurti has found an idiom for her tale; her verse carries us through not only the shock and tumult of the battle scenes but through the laments, the expositions, the side tales, the locales that range from the lush scenes of the Indian forests to the splendors of the Pandava court, even the two long books of political instruction, and including one of the most powerful and beautiful renderings of the Bhagavad Gita yet in English. So common is the Mahabharata in India—in its many translations and retellings, its stage and tv versions, its comic book and children’s book forms—that Ramanujan once wrote that no Indian ever hears the Mahabharata for the first time; but if you are an American reader new to the story, this is, simply, the best place to start. This is a version which allows us to possess the story emotionally, as we can possess Homer and Virgil and Dante only in versions which carry the mark of the artist in their translation; I find myself pairing it in my mind with Robert Fitzgerald’s translation of the Iliad. Part of the issue with tackling the vast original is the glacial pace of the narration; the Mahabharata can take a very, very long time to say relatively little. “Tell me all in great detail,” one of the interlocutors says, and it does, it does. Satyamurti has taken this huge agglomerated text and sculpted from it a version that moves with admirable pace and yet preserves much of the original’s staggering welter of invention; she has taken a catchall text and made of it a work of art in proportion as well as content. Here is the Mahabharata made accessible to a Western readership in a way it has not been before. “I am the brilliance in the brilliant,” Krishna says in the Gita; “Have no more fear. Now I am the friend you know.”

Not bad, Not hard to read... but not the best of the bunch (in my revised opinion...)
By J. Fitzpatrick
[I have revised my opinion pretty radically (see my comments below), but I have also kept my original review without revision:

My favorite abridged/ abbreviated version of the Mahabharata (so far). Of course, one 'should' read the complete text.... Of course.... But its 8,000 or so pages...! I have the complete English version (the freebie from Gutenberg) and have read a bit of it. But it really helps to have the core story in mind while the complete version is drifting hither and thither.

Some have complained that the author prefers to use a kind of free verse. If it bothers you perhaps you might prefer the version by Ramesh Memon. So far I've found none of the abridged versions completely satisfying. There is one that condenses the story and then has straight translation of sections in between the condensed version. It's not to my taste (for now...), but you might love it!

In short: this version grabs my interest and it seems likely I will actually finish it! And that, I suppose, really is the key.

UPDATE (28 November 2015): I've modified my evaluation a bit (quite a bit in fact since I dropped my evaluation from 4 stars to 3...). As I noted above, I liked this version - and the poetic aspect - and felt upon completion that I had a real feel for the basic story.... Then I went back to my Ramesh Memon, The Mahabharata: A Modern Rendering, which I had previously stopped reading - believing it to be a bit... well, overdone might be the word I used at the time.

... And discovered that Carole had utterly and completely omitted the magic from the book! She passes over the 12/ 13 years of exile with a quick poetic summary that left me happy at the time that I had read only her summary and not the 'boring' full version. Then..., I read the same section in Ramesh Memon's version...! And found that Carole had left out the entire mythic story! The flying saucers, magic weapons that seem straight out of Star Wars and humanoid creatures remenescent of Tolkien's Imortal Elves - all utterly missing form Carole's text!

So my present recommendation is to save your money and either jump into the complete translation (free on the internet and found on Amazon for no more than a couple of bucks) (although this is NOT what I suggest) OR you can pick up the Ramesh Memon text (called The Mahabharata: A Modern Rendering). OR you can go a different route and go with Jaya: An Illustrated Retelling of the Mahabharata by Devdutt Pattanaik who takes a completely different approach. The author of Jaya holds your hand as you try to pick out the basic story and just figure out who is who, how they relate (and often just how they are related!) to each other and what exactly is going on. Plus the author considers aspects of the story in context - for example: how is it that the heroes do such bad things! And what is going on (in the context of the story) in the Bhagavad Gita (considered a holy book, but only a chapter in the entire Mahabharata)....

My suggestion is simple: begin with Devdutt Pattanaik, An Illustrated Retelling of the Mahabharata - this will give you a basis for going deeper (and let you determine if you even want to go further!).

Then grab a copy of Ramesh Memon, The Mahabharata: A Modern Rendering.

And finally, if you have a strong constitution, you may delve into the actual unedited translation(s)....

Laudable attempt, but too much lost
By Frank
This is a fine, ambitious attempt to put a compressed version of the Mahabharata into what sounds like modern American" poetry. I have read other translations, in addition to prose retellings and commentaries, and appreciate the formidable task faced by Satyamurti. My hesitation in giving this book a higher rating comes from my disagreement with the choices she made to simplify and smooth out the flavor of the original. I also disagree with her decisions to omit certain episodes and to over-simplify others. Certainly, however, these were tough choices to make, and no one will agree with any translators decisions in this regard, given the vastness of the epic. The book will perhaps be an adequate (though misleading) version for some readers who are coming to the Mahabharata for the first (and perhaps the last) time. But for me, too much is lost, not least the horror, suffering, supernatural interventions, raw mysticism, spirituality, devotional love, motivations, and other elements that are unfamiliar and therefore challenging to English-language readers. Satyamurti has attempted the impossible, and she should be praised for that; and no translator can possibly get the Mahabharata "right." But this one left me feeling that too much of the intensity and "foreignness" had been left out in order to make the epic palatable to Satyamurti's presumed audience.
