Great book, very helpful
By David Jensen
This book is a fine, understandable guide for anybody considering a stem cell treatment. It was written by a stem cell researcher at the University of California, but does not bog down in technical information. The goal of the author is to explain complex scientific issues in a way we can all understand. The author has faced a grave illness and knows firsthand the type of pressures that they can generate. He was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer at the age of 42, a very young age to come down with that affliction. Going through that experience was one of the important reasons he wrote this book - to help other persons like himself who are trying to come to grips with difficult medical and scientific matters. If you are one of those persons, I recommend the book highly. If you are just seeking more information about stem cell research, it has clear and forthright explanations about the field. He has no ties with Big Pharma or any stem cell firms. For more on Knoepfler and the book, you can see a Sept. 15, 2013, article about him at The Sacramento Bee Web site. [...]

Stem Cells 101
By Caroline
As a stem cell scientist and now editor, I've read a fair few non-fiction science books in my time. Most struggle with the task of presenting complicated data and theories to a general readership, and the resulting manuscript is usually dense, convoluted, and packed with jargon. By contrast, Stem Cells: An Insider's Guide is easily accessible and moreover is entertaining - a key ingredient for many readers.

The book is a whirlwind tour through the world of stem cells. It discusses not only the basic science, but more thorny issues like ethics, regulation, and the patient-doctor perspective. For a stem cell scientist, it is at times too simple. But that is deliberate, as any additional complexity would probably deter a wider audience. For the patient, this book can read like a self-help guide, and in many ways it is: questions will be answered, and the resources to find out more are provided. The book is largely US-centric, which is expected given the author's background.

In short, there's something in here for everyone. This book is best for those who want to find out more about stem cells: what they are, what they can do, what they can't do, how they are used currently and what promises they hold for the future.

Making the science accessible
By Greta Beekhuis
It is very rare to find a scientist who can write eloquently about a very technical, complex, controversial subject and make it understandable and accessible to the general public. This book is exactly what it purports to be...an insider's guide to the galaxy of stem cells. Regenerative medicine and the future of personalized medicine are revolutionary topics even among the select group of scientists who DO understand the complex technicalities. Dr. Knoepfler does a masterful job of explaining what we should all have learned in high school science and are now reading about in the newspaper or hearing about on TV and radio. After you finish reading this book, please consider donating a copy to your local public library. I would encourage anyone who wants to support our future STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) students to get this book into school science curriculums and libraries. Should be required reading for all medical school students.

The Book of Ultimate Truths (The Cornelius Murphy Trilogy 1), by Robert Rankin

Cornelius Murphy is a big-haired seventeen year old tall school leaver, devoted avoider of regular employment and Stuff of Epics. And together with his diminutive companion and bestest friend Tuppe (the stuff of epics to a slightly lesser degree) they set out in a 1958 Cadillac Eldorado to travel the length of the British Isles in search of the missing chapters from a great and wonderful tome: The Book of Ultimate Truths. Penned by self-styled Most Amazing Man Who Ever Lived, Hugo Rune.
Although few people remember Rune today, in his time he was lionised by society for his many achievements.
He spoke seventeen languages, played darts with the Dalai Lama and shared his sleeping bag (on separate occasions) with Albert Einstein, Lawrence of Arabia, George Formby and Marilyn Monroe. He was worshipped as a god by an East Acton cargo cult and once scaled Everest in a smoking jacket and a pair of plus-fours to win a bet with Oscar Wilde. He travelled to Venus in the company of George Adamski, reinvented the ocarina and was yearly burned in effigy by the Chiswick Townswomens’ Guild.
He was an expert swordsman, a world traveller, a poet, a painter, a guru unto gurus and a passionate hater of Bud Abbot. He won a first at Oxford, squandered three fortunes, made love to a thousand women, imbibed strange drugs and almost pipped Einstein for the Nobel Prize. He was barred from every Chinese noodle parlour in West London and died penniless in a Hastings boarding house in his ninetieth year.
He penned nearly eight million words, wrote the songs that made the whole world sing and knew all the answers to all the big questions. And he was, as his acolyte Aleister Crowley once said, One Hell of a Holy Guru!
His greatest work The Book of Ultimate Truths explains in terms understandable to the layman just what life is all about. Why there are always two small screws left over when you reassemble that broken toaster. Where all the yellow handled screwdrivers go to. The truth about the A-Z street directory and the Forbidden Zones that lie hidden all around us. The spontaneous generation of crowds. Where the flat hedgehogs upon country roads really come from. The real deal about Time, the Creation of the Universe and pretty much everything really.
Throughout his long life he was constantly under attack from the Forces of Darkness that sought to stop him revealing these Ultimate Truths.
And now Cornelius and Tuppe must battle these same Dark Forces if they are to seek out and publish the missing chapters of Rune. The going won’t be easy, as they encounter demonic Scotsmen, mad monks and cake-obsessed evil fairies, but it will be a lot of fun and The Book of Ultimate Truths must be republished. The survival of Mankind depends upon it.
The Book of Ultimate Truths is the first instalment of a three part Epic Adventure to out-Epic-Adventure all three-part Epic Adventures that have gone before. The further adventures of Cornelius, Tuppe and Hugo Rune can be found in

The secret life of the small screw
By Alex De Visscher
This is Robert Rankin's eighth novel, the first of a new series. It introduces some endearing characters: the wild-haired seventeen-year-old Cornelius Murphy, and his dwarf-like companion Tuppe.
A typical Rankin plot: Cornelius and Tuppe are on an epic quest to retrieve the suppressed chapters of The Book of Ultimate Truths, and to keep them out of evil hands. Hugo Rune, the author of the book in the book, appeared in earlier Rankin novels, but now his outlandish ideas get the full attention they deserve: about the secret life of Gandhi and H.G. Wells, about the strange behavior of biros and small scews, stories that make you laugh aloud.
This was the first book I read from Robert Rankin, and at times I wondered if this guy needed to see a doctor. I read it again recently, after having read all his other books, and I found out that I had missed a lot of jokes during the first reading. The more you read these books, the better they get.

This book defines madness...
By Karthik Kumar
First of all, I don't understand why this guy isn't that popular (at least in the USA)! His sense of humour is unlike anything you would have ever read in your life. Laced with witty humour, brilliant use of words and insane ideas, his plots keep getting better and better with successive novels. However, this one remains a classic to the very end. Its about Hugo Rune and all his crazy theories about life (well, at least the life of a screw!). I sometimes wonder how this guy's mind works...I mean, first of all, his plot is incredibly complicated, on top of that, its situational comedy to the very best (forget those stupid sitcoms after reading this...at least I have)
Read this one and expand your mind! And the ending of this book is...well, MINDBLOWING!

Hilariously wierd
By A Customer
References to Douglas Adams aside (no, it's nothing like the Hitchhiker's Guide), this book is absolutely hilarious. It's one of the few books I've ever read that's been able to make me laugh out loud so often. Rankin's bizarre and somewhat halucinatory style is guaranteed to catch you off guard. The endorsements on the back include Terry Pratchett saying that Rankin is one of the few authors that can consistently make him laugh. What better reason do you need?

The Gruffalo (Picture Books), by Julia Donaldson

A mouse is taking a stroll through the deep, dark wood when along comes a hungry fox, then an owl, and then a snake. The mouse is good enough to eat but smart enough to know this, so he invents . . . the gruffalo! As Mouse explains, the gruffalo is a creature with terrible claws, and terrible tusks in its terrible jaws, and knobbly knees and turned-out toes, and a poisonous wart at the end of its nose. But Mouse has no worry to show. After all, there’s no such thing as a gruffalo. . . .

From Publishers Weekly
The eponymous character introduced by this British team owes a large debt to Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are. When Mouse meets Fox in the "deep dark wood," he invents a story about the gruffalo, described very much like Sendak's fearsome quartet of wild thingsA"He has terrible tusks, and terrible claws, and terrible teeth in his terrible jaws." The gullible fox runs away when Mouse tells him that the gruffalo's favorite food is roasted fox. "Silly old Fox!" says Mouse, "Doesn't he know?/ There's no such thing as a gruffalo!" Owl and Snake follow suit until, with a turn of the page, Mouse runs into the creature he has imagined. Quick-thinking Mouse then tells the monster, "I'm the scariest creature in this deep dark wood./ Just walk behind me and soon you'll see,/ Everyone for miles is afraid of me." Fox, Owl and Snake appear to be terrified of the tiny mouse, but readers can plainly see the real object of their fears. By story's end, the gruffalo flees, and Mouse enjoys his nut lunch in peace. Despite the derivative plot line, debut author Donaldson manipulates the repetitive language and rhymes to good advantage, supplying her story with plenty of scary-but-not-too-scary moments. Scheffler's gruffalo may seem a goofy hybrid of Max's wild things, but his cartoonlike illustrations build suspense via spot-art previews of the monster's orange eyes, black tongue and purple prickles until the monster's appearance in full. Ages 4-8.
Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 3-To save himself from being eaten by a fox, an owl, and a snake, an enterprising mouse declares that he is having lunch with a monster whose favorite food just happens to be the animal who is at that moment threatening him. With each telling, the gruffalo becomes more menacing until all of the rodent's tormentors leave him unharmed. The mouse scoffs at them, for everyone knows "There's no such thing as a gruffal...." But a turn of the page reveals-you guessed it-a gruffalo, that thinks the mouse will "...taste good on a slice of bread." Undaunted, the rodent devises a plan to frighten the monster off. Young readers will love the humor in this preposterous story of a trick that backfires and the way the protagonist talks himself out of his difficulties. Best of all, they will relish being in on the joke as they join in the reading of the delightfully repetitious rhyming text. Scheffler's cartoonlike illustrations, rendered in watercolor, colored pencils, and ink, are large and well paced. Facial expressions contrast the animals' alarm with the jaunty nonchalance of the mouse. The double-page spread that reveals the gruffalo-terrible claws, black tongue, poisonous wart, purple prickles, and all-is just scary enough to tickle but not frighten youngsters. Serve this one for a rollicking good time.

From Kirkus Reviews
The action of this rhymed and humorous tale centers upon a mouse who ``took a stroll/through the deep dark wood./A fox saw the mouse/and the mouse looked good.'' The mouse escapes being eaten by telling the fox that he is on his way to meet his friend the gruffalo (a monster of his imagination), whose favorite food is roasted fox. The fox beats a hasty retreat. Similar escapes are in store for an owl and a snake; both hightail it when they learn the particulars: tusks, claws, terrible jaws, eyes orange, tongue black, purple prickles on its back. When the gruffalo suddenly materializes out of the mouse's head and into the forest, the mouse has to think quick, declaring himself inedible as the ``scariest creature in the deep dark wood,'' and inviting the gruffalo to follow him to witness the effect he has on the other creatures. When the gruffalo hears that the mouse's favorite food is gruffalo crumble, he runs away. It's a fairly innocuous tale, with twists that aren't sharp enough and treachery that has no punch. Scheffler's funny scenes prevent the suspense from culminating; all his creatures, predator and prey, are downright lovable. (Picture book. 4-8) -- Copyright 1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. Not my "favourite" version...
By Nicole S.
I agree 100% with a previous user comment... Changing the text to Americanize phrases has completely altered the rhyme and flow of the book and makes it lose it's charm... Disappointed that Amazon didn't say where the book was edited, or offer another version. Would have never ordered if I knew that it was changed from the original that my kids love.

Super adorable book! Great for all ages!
By sommemi
Such a cute book!!! Love the artistry and the way the book is laid out. Children can easily predict the pattern to the pages. Also, the story itself is ADORABLE! And even as a grown up I was surprised at the ending. HA! I had friends who had read this book when they were young and when they heard I had never read it, told me I needed to get it but didn't tell me how the story ended. I thought it was really adorable and showed how smart you can be even if you are little and people discount you.

We love it. It was instantly attractive to my son
By kiddokaamazon
We love it. It was instantly attractive to my son, just the "what's a gruffalo" line being repeated cracked him up. The story is dramatic and descriptive enough to allow for "theatrics and funny voices" while reading together, which is very important to us. Illustrations are good. The animals (fox, owl, snake) are ones my son could relate to during subsequent zoo visits and when we drive past "woods" he's on the alert for mice and his gruffalo. I understand how the mouse's trickery could be concerning for some parents, but we have yet to face issues/questions regarding that aspect from our child. He just takes at face value the rhymes and the animals and their different homes and sounds. Maybe its an age-related thing?

Disgrace, by J.M. COETZEE

After years teaching Romantic poetry at the Technical University of Cape Town, David Lurie, middle-aged and twice divorced, has an impulsive affair with a student. The affair sours; he is denounced and summoned before a committee of inquiry. Willing to admit his guilt, but refusing to yield to pressure to repent publicly, he resigns and retreats to his daughter Lucy's isolated farm. For a time, his daughter's influence and the natural rhythms of the farm promise to harmonize his discordant life. But the balance of power in the country is shifting. He and Lucy become victims of a savage and disturbing attack which brings into relief all the faults in their relationship. Chilling, uncompromising and unforgettable, Disgrace is a masterpiece.

Amazon.com Review
David Lurie is hardly the hero of his own life, or anyone else's. At 52, the protagonist of Disgrace is at the end of his professional and romantic game, and seems to be deliberately courting disaster. Long a professor of modern languages at Cape Town University College, he has recently been relegated to adjunct professor of communications at the same institution, now pointedly renamed Cape Technical University: Although he devotes hours of each day to his new discipline, he finds its first premise, as enunciated in the Communications 101 handbook, preposterous: "Human society has created language in order that we may communicate our thoughts, feelings and intentions to each other." His own opinion, which he does not air, is that the origins of speech lie in song, and the origins of song in the need to fill out with sound the overlarge and rather empty human soul. Twice married and twice divorced, his magnetic looks on the wane, David rather cruelly seduces one of his students, and his conduct unbecoming is soon uncovered. In his eighth novel, J.M. Coetzee might have been content to write a searching academic satire. But in Disgrace he is intent on much more, and his art is as uncompromising as his main character, though infinitely more complex. Refusing to play the public-repentance game, David gets himself fired--a final gesture of contempt. Now, he thinks, he will write something on Byron's last years. Not empty, unread criticism, "prose measured by the yard," but a libretto. To do so, he heads for the Eastern Cape and his daughter's farm. In her mid-20s, Lucy has turned her back on city sophistications: with five hectares, she makes her living by growing flowers and produce and boarding dogs. "Nothing," David thinks, "could be more simple." But nothing, in fact, is more complicated--or, in the new South Africa, more dangerous. Far from being the refuge he has sought, little is safe in Salem. Just as David has settled into his temporary role as farmworker and unenthusiastic animal-shelter volunteer, he and Lucy are attacked by three black men. Unable to protect his daughter, David's disgrace is complete. Hers, however, is far worse.

There is much more to be explored in Coetzee's painful novel, and few consolations. It would be easy to pick up on his title and view Disgrace as a complicated working-out of personal and political shame and responsibility. But the author is concerned with his country's history, brutalities, and betrayals. Coetzee is also intent on what measure of soul and rights we allow animals. After the attack, David takes his role at the shelter more seriously, at last achieving an unlikely home and some measure of love. In Coetzee's recent Princeton lectures, The Lives of Animals, an aging novelist tells her audience that the question that occupies all lab and zoo creatures is, "Where is home, and how do I get there?" David, though still all-powerful compared to those he helps dispose of, is equally trapped, equally lost.

Disgrace is almost willfully plain. Yet it possesses its own lean, heartbreaking lyricism, most of all in its descriptions of unwanted animals. At the start of the novel, David tells his student that poetry either speaks instantly to the reader--"a flash of revelation and a flash of response"--or not at all. Coetzee's book speaks differently, its layers and sadnesses endlessly unfolding. --Kerry Fried

From Publishers Weekly
As a writer, Coetzee is a literary cascade, with a steady output of fiction and criticism (literary and social) over the last two decades. This latest book, his first novel in five years, is a searing evocation of post-apartheid South Africa; it earned him an unprecedented second Booker Prize. An uninspired teacher and twice divorced, David Lurie is a 52-year-old poetry scholar-cum-"adjunct professor of communications" at Cape Technical University. Spooked by the flicker of twilight in his life trajectory, he sees himself as an aged Lothario soon to be "shuddered over" by the pretty girls he has so often wooed; he is disappointed in and unengaged by the academy he now serves by rote; and he cannot locate the notes for his opera, Byron in Italy, in which he has placed so much reluctant hope. He is, even at his best, a man of "moderated bliss." So when he seduces Melanie Isaacs, a lithe student from his poetry elective ("She does not resist. All she does is avert herself"), he believes her to represent the final object of his desire, his last act of lush, Romantic desperation. And then he is found out. This not uncommon outrage earns him a dismissal and censure from the university committee he refuses to cooperate with in hopes of saving his job. He immediately shoves off for Salem in the Eastern Cape where his daughter, Lucy, manages a dog kennel and works her smallholding, harvesting a modest crop. Here David hopes to cleanse himself with time-honored toil. But his new life in the country offers scarce refuge. Instead, he is flummoxed to discover an unfamiliar Lucy-principled, land-devoted, with a heroic resignation to the social and political developments of modern South Africa. He also memorably encounters Petrus, Lucy's ambitious colored neighbor and sometime assistant. Petrus embodies the shifting, tangled vicissitudes of a new national schematic, and forces David to relate to the broad segment of society previously shrouded by the mists of his self-absorption. But a violent attack on the estate irrevocably alters how the book's central figure perceives many things: his daughter and her bewildering (to him) courage, the rights of South Africa's grossly aggrieved majority, the souls of the damaged dogs he helps put down at the local Animal Welfare League and even the character of Lord Byron's mistress and the heroine of his operatic "chamber-play." But this is no tale of hard-earned, satisfying transformation. It is, rather, a paean to willfulness, an aria on the theme of secca, or the drying up of "the source of everything." In Coetzee's tale, not a single note is false; every sentence is perfectly calibrated and essential. Every passage questions the arbitrary division between the "major and minor" and the long-accepted injustices propped up by nothing so much as time. The book somehow manages to speak of little but interiority and still insinuate peripheries of things it doesn't touch. Somber and crystalline, it "has the right mix of timelessness and decay." It is about the harsh cleansing of humiliation and the regretfulness of knowing things: "I lack the lyrical. I manage love too well. Even when I burn I don't sing, if you understand me." To perceive is to understand in this beautifully spare, necessary novel. First serial to the New Yorker. (Nov.) FYI: Viking accelerated the pub date after the Booker Prize was announced on October 25.

From Library Journal
Middle-aged professor David Lurie shuffles numbly through the shifting landscape of postapartheid South Africa. After he gets fired for sleeping with one of his students--and refusing to express remorse--Lurie finds shelter with his grown daughter and is exposed to a social reality that threatens more than his own sense of security. Winner of the Booker Prize, Coetzee's eighth novel employs spare, compelling prose to explore subtly the stuttering steps one man takes in a new world. (LJ 12/99)

A powerful story
By MJZ
I found this book disturbing and therefore I found it to be great. When a book makes you uncomfortable that is a book that deserves respect. David Lurie is a character who is both likeable to the point of sympathizing with him, to being distasteful and repugnant. He is by far one of the most rounded characters I've encountered. The writing reminded me somewhat of Graham Greene, very basic and straightforward, and tells the story without going into extraneous amounts of detail. This is a book that ends leaving you to wonder "what the hell did I just read?" That is what makes it powerful. There were a few times I had to put the book down, because it made me uncomfortable but I still managed to finish it in two days. The story is about the consequences of choice. Whether we accept them or do not, does not change the outcome. We've all made bad choices and have tried to rectify them only to discover we can't. If this book causes you distress, then it's done its job.

Unsustainability in and Inflexible World
By Emily
*This review contains spoilers!*

In Disgrace, J.M. Coetzee artfully navigates the complicated liminal spaces that exist in a world structured by binaries: African/White, old/young, past/future, even living/dead. David Lurie, a shamed Professor of English at a Cape Town university finds himself in the consistently unsustainable position of attempting to live beyond these entrenched oppositions, and Disgrace traces the effects of his resistance.

David is an intensely unlikable protagonist - his utter lack of moral compass remains steadfast throughout the novel. When we meet him, he is perpetrating a scandal that will define the trajectory of the novel - at best, it might be called an inappropriate professor/teacher relationship, at worst a series of unapologetic date-rapes. He leaves his University after refusing to accept the terms of his punishment (therapy and perhaps more importantly, repentance) and retreats to the country to live with his daughter Lucy. There, he only gets to live a few weeks of country life before their household is violently disrupted by a break-in during which Lucy is raped by two men. The rest of the novel deals with the aftermath - both Lucy's reaction, and David's resistance to it.

Certainly, a large chunk of the book deals intimately with the political landscape of South Africa, and in particular focuses on the complicated race relations between the white people and the native Africans. Though this takes place long after Apartheid has ended, Coetzee makes it strikingly clear that history has a way of resisting being laid to rest. The climax of this particular trajectory occurs when Lucy reveals that she has begun to view her rape as restitution: "What if that is the price one has to pay [...]? They see me as owing something" (158). This moment in which Lucy allows herself to be subjugated, to submit to a side of oppositions, is the moment in which Coetzee fully realizes the inflexible nature of the system.

In the last few pages of the novel, Coetzee writes of David's reflections upon his volunteering job euthanizing dogs: "What the dog will not be able to work out [...], what his nose will not tell him, is how one can enter what seems to be an ordinary room and never come out again. Something happens in this room, something unmentionable: here the soul is yanked out of the body; briefly it hangs about in the air, twisting and contorting; then it is sucked away and is gone" (219). With this quote, Coetzee grasps the heart of the matter that he has spent a novel untangling. Life, or at least the life that he describes, takes place within that brief liminal period. Nothing is absolute, and the ostensible binaries that structure the world are proven to fall apart under scrutiny. And yet, though nobody is actually born to live within one side of these binaries, it is a structure imposed upon all humans from birth. We see resistance to this in every action David takes: from attempting to live without age, to refusing to accept or deny his charges, to vehemently chasing down Lucy's rapists, to moving from country to city without finding wholeness in either.

How do we resist this without falling apart? Coetzee doesn't seem to propose an answer to that - as we watch David resist and still fail, resist and still become utterly subjugated, we are forced to come to terms with the fact that living beyond the inflexible structure of the world is absolutely unsustainable. Thus Coetzee doesn't provide an answer, he is just here to give us the lay of the land.

However, just because he writes of an unlikable character dealing with unsolvable problems does not mean that Coetzee doesn't speckle Disgrace with disarming moments of heart. Importantly, amongst the bigger issues that he grapples with, Coetzee also sets a narrative cadence that allows for moments of lovely reflection on particulars of life and relationships. One that is really perfect, I think, is a line describing a short car trip with Lucy: "He sits beside her, eating the sandwiches she has made. His nose drips; he hopes she does not notice" (71). Here, Coetzee's narrative power for developing character and relationships is palpable. We still might not feel tenderness for David, but his humanity is tangible.

Unlike many other novels that begin with a morally ambiguous character, Disgrace is not about redemption or recuperation. David remains unlikable, Lucy remains subjugated, her rapists remain at large. In this way, Coetzee is able to reveal the thrust of a complicated issue without offering a solution. Thus, Disgrace becomes much more than a political statement about race relations in South Africa - it is also a portrait of the shared human condition itself. By blurring binaries that exist in absolutes almost everywhere in the world, Coetzee powerfully reveals the heart of problem everybody must learn to live around. People here can call him a misogynist, a rape-apologist, or any other number of words ending in "-ist," but I do not think that is the case. Coetzee writes David Lurie not as an emblem, but as a warning - this is what happens when a society makes human nature itself an unsustainable condition.

Great
By Nicole Del Sesto
I decided to focus on World Literature, and this is exactly the kind of book I had in mind. It is a snapshot of South Africa at a very specific time. I was not surprised to find this place harsh. I was not surprised to find that it dealt with racism. This wasn't 1960's in the South racism. This was a country still trying to come to grips (20 years ago) with race relations.

Mostly, however, it was about David. His relationship with his daughter, his fall from grace, his understanding of himself.

It was a very good book, a quick read. But gritty - and anybody who has severe sensitivity to animals should NOT read this book. I can get through almost anything in books, and I actually had to skip most of a chapter of this book.

I'm looking forward to reading more Coetzee.

Essential Guide to SNMP MIB Development, Use, and Diagnosis. The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) allows Managers (software) to communicate with Agents (also software) on network-managed devices, to collect status, for configuration and control, and to receive unsolicited events (traps). A MIB (Management Information Base) is a file containing syntax defining data objects to be managed and traps to be sent. MIB objects and their values are the focus of the protocol. Simplicity of SNMP is the reason for its initial and continued success -- simple MIB objects define information sent using a simple message set. Yet it is flexible and scalable, used to manage small networks as well as large, distributed networks. This handbook is intended for developers (MIB and agent designers) and end-users (network engineers and IT-management specialists). It serves as an instructional manual and as a reference, and contains case descriptions, examples, practical advice, clear descriptions of standards, user exercises and quiz questions. It is an important book for anyone involved with SNMP, suitable for those new to the protocol as well as for experienced practitioners.

The simplicity of SNMP is the reason for its initial and continued success -- simple MIB objects define information that is transported by a simple message set. Yet it is flexible and scalable, and is used to manage very small networks as well as large, distributed networks. Many good tools are available, both open source and commercial.

This handbook is intended for both developers (MIB designers, agent software developers) and end-users (network engineers, IT management specialists). It serves as an instructional manual as well as a reference, and contains case studies, practical advice, clear descriptions of standards, user exercises and quiz questions.

Content is based on a series of training seminars developed by the author, which have been delivered to SNMP practitioners in a variety of endeavors -- government agencies, university IT-department, telephone companies, electronics manufacturers, printer company, aircraft manufacturer, televison equipment providers, televison broadcaster, automated fare collection system, space agency.

This handbook is MIB-centeric, but covers many closely related topics. Sample topics include:
+ SNMP tutorial describing important aspects of the entire protocol, including messaging standards, security, agent models, network models, and enterprises.
+ Clear descriptions of the two version of MIB syntax, SMIv1 and SMIv2.
+ MIB syntax examples are provided from many standard MIBs.
+ Diagnosing problem MIBs (which managers fail to compile properly).
+ MIB-toolkit recommendations.
+ Managing networks. How to research MIB requirements and how to locate needed MIBs.
+ Partitioning -- Enterprise SMI MIB, Textual Convention MIB, Subsystem MIB, Product MIB.
+ Expected support for standard MIBs by all agents.
+ Agent semantics and development issues.
+ Trap models and configuration of trap filters in managers.
+ Indexed tables, agent row-creation, manager row-creation.
+ A recommended MIB development process is described.

"The Book" on MIBs
By J. E. Fehl
Finally the book on MIBs outlining concise MIB construction techniques using ASN.1 language. The SNMP MIB Handbook by Larry Walsh is very well written and conveys much of the same information presented in his training courses. Now everyone from product supervision to MIB developers to users of developed MIBs can have this industry information in their hands. As a Network Engineer, I find many manufacturers enterprise MIBs to be chockfull of errors as well as deficient in providing the kinds of information essential to network management. Now that a book actually details these MIB short-comings, that this book will become de-facto reading for those doing this essential development. There are many references to common and not so common developmental mistakes as well as composing MIBs to the highest standard. While it is understood that the MIB is basically a map of the available data on the device to be managed and that the device agent is part of this management, perhaps the highlights within this book will be beneficial to those developing agent software as well.
The book will help Network Engineers determine causes and fixes for poorly written MIBs. Test tools and methodology are a significant focus and apply to all levels of use and development. The information presented in this respect cannot be obtained anywhere else except through years of trouble-shooting effort.
This book is highly recommended reading for those involved in all levels of SNMP understanding, development and use.

The Authoritative Reference
By Mark Harlos
I carefully read through the Amazon reviews, before ordering this book. The consensus was clear -- this is the book! I was new to SNMP, and working under tight deadline pressure.

This book contained all of the information I needed, explaining the up-to-date standards. MIBs are not rocket science, but there is a lot of confusing detail; I don't know how I would have gotten a proper result without this book.

The customer was very satisfied with our product -- and had their own copy of this book!

The dark-haired tots playing on the far side of the sumptuous hotel lounge held Samira's gaze. They weren't loud or boisterous, the middle-aged woman with them saw to that. They were just a pair of ordinary toddlers.

Yet Samira couldn't drag her eyes away from them. She watched the progress of one little boy as he walked the length of a sofa, his fingers splayed on the silk upholstery for support. He gurgled his delight and grinned at his companion who wobbled along behind him.

Samira swallowed. That hollow feeling was back, worse now, turning into a twisting stab of hurt that knifed all the way from her womb up high under her ribs.

She tried to focus on Celeste's animated chatter about a new restaurant. Apparently it had unrivalled rooftop views of the Eiffel Tower as well as several Michelin stars and was the new place to eat and be seen.

Samira's stomach rebelled at the mention of food.

Or maybe it was something else that made her insides clench so hard.

The second toddler landed on his bottom, arms waving, and the woman—grandmother? Nanny?—gathered him up. Samira's arms twitched then fell, lax and empty, into her lap.

She blinked and turned away.

Empty. That was exactly how she felt.

She would never have a child of her own to hold. The doctor had made that clear.

She'd tried so hard to regroup these past four years, and she'd come so far, but nothing could erase that searing, hollow ache within.

Tm so pleased you can attend tonight's charity auction in person.' Celeste leaned across their porcelain teacups and Samira swung her gaze back to the pretty Parisienne. 'Bidders will adore the chance to meet the talented princess behind the gorgeous fashions. Your donation to the auction is sure to fetch a huge price.'

Samira fixed on a practised smile and refused to cringe at yet another reference to her royal status.

As daughter of, and now sister to, the Sultan of Jazeer, she knew all too well that royal rank didn't guarantee happiness.

Her heart lurched but she kept her gaze on her companion, not letting it stray to the other side of the opulent room.

She reminded herself she was a pragmatist. Her successful design business benefited from the cachet of her aristocratic name. Designs by Samira had taken off these last few years. Her clientele, among the globe's ultrawealthy, appreciated working with someone who understood their world, who promised absolute exclusivity and confidentiality. She had far more than many women dreamed of: independence, success, wealth.

What right had she to yearn for more?

Yet still that bone-deep ache persisted, no matter how often she reminded herself how lucky she was. For what did the trappings of success mean when deep at the heart of you there was…nothing?

Samira bit her lip. She would conquer this. She would!

'I'm looking forward to it, Celeste.' Samira wrenched her thoughts back to tonight's gala. 'You and your team have done a marvellous job pulling it all together. How, exactly, will the auction work? What do you want me to do?'

Celeste launched into an explanation of the auction, the exclusive invitation list and the business opportunities tonight's event would present.

Yet, businesswoman though she was, Samira couldn't conjure answering enthusiasm. Perhaps because, having been born to status and privilege, mixing with the stratosphere of European society held no thrill for her.

Was this all there was? Long days of work followed by an endless round of society events where she'd mix business, pleasure and occasional philanthropy, and leave feeling alone and empty?

Samira blinked and gave herself a mental shake, refusing to linger on the maudlin thoughts that had edged her consciousness for so long.

She leaned back in her chair, nodding as Celeste emphasised a point, letting her weary body relax for the first time, it felt, in days.

That was it. She was exhausted. No wonder her attention strayed. She'd been in consultation with a new first lady in South America yesterday about a gown for an inauguration ball, then had stopped off in New York to see another client, only arriving in Paris an hour ago.

When she rested she'd be herself, eager to be caught up once more in the challenges of business, and especially the joy of designing.

Movement caught her eye. A tall figure in a dark suit moved through the perfectly arranged seating with a long, quick stride that made her think of her dressmaker's shears cutting through rich velvet.

She told herself it was a ridiculous comparison but when she turned to focus on him she realised it was apt. Though dressed with the formidable elegance of the best bespoke tailoring, some indefinable air proclaimed he didn't belong in the luxury of Paris's finest hotel. He belonged somewhere more vital, where crystal chandeliers and dainty side tables were unnecessary fripperies.

A good head taller than every other man in the vicinity, his shoulders the broadest Samira had ever seen, he nevertheless moved with a fluid, athletic grace that spoke to her designer's eye.

A squeal of excitement froze her in the act of turning back to Celeste. One of the little, chubby-cheeked boys had spotted him and was scrambling across the sofa towards him.

A low, rumbling chuckle reached her ears as the man bent and scooped up both children, one in each arm, as easily as she'd pick up a couple of cushions. He lifted them high, making them giggle with delight, and held them close as he ducked his head and murmured to each of them in turn. Tiny starfish hands planted on his shoulders and hair in their eagerness to get close and she heard him laugh again, the sound a ribbon of warmth channelling through the chill emptiness inside her.

Just like that, without any fanfare or warning, Samira's world contracted to the cold void of her barren body and the devastating vignette of a happy family on the other side of the room.

The dividing line excluding her from them had never been more real, or more unbreakable.

Pain juddered through her, making her clench her jaw and grab at the arms of her lounge chair.

There would be no family for her, no children. As for finding a life partner to love… The air hissed between her teeth at the impossibility of that particular fantasy.

'Samira. Is anything wrong?'

'Nothing at all.' Samira turned to Celeste with a dazzling smile that only years of practice in the public eye could muster. Surreptitiously she breathed in through her nose, filling lungs that seemed to have cramped shut. 'It sounds like tonight will be a huge success. With luck you'll attract far more than your fund-raising target.'

'Thanks to you.' At Samira's raised brow she shrugged and smiled. 'And to the rest of the donors.' She paused, glancing across the lounge. 'Speak of the devil, there's one of them now.' Celeste sat straighter, swiftly smoothing her short skirt and flicking her blonde hair from her face.

She leaned close to Samira and whispered, 'If only we could auction off a night in his bed we'd make a fortune. I'd bid for that myself and, believe me, I wouldn't let anyone outbid me.'

Surprised at the change in her companion, Samira turned. Yet she knew which man Celeste referred to. It could only be the hunky father of two who wore his elegant clothes with such casual panache that even her long-dormant libido sat up and slavered.

Yet she wasn't prepared for the shock that slammed into her solar plexus as she saw him again. For this time he'd turned and she saw his broad, high brow, defined cheekbones and the rough-cut jaw that looked dangerous and sexy at the same time. A long, harsh blade of a nose somehow melded those too-strong features into a whole that was boldly, outrageously attractive.

And familiar.

Samira's breath hissed sharply as she recognised the man she hadn't seen in years. The man who'd once been almost as dear to her as her brother, Asim.

A tumble of emotions bubbled inside. Excitement and pleasure, regret and pain, and finally a sharp tang of something that tasted like desire, raw and real for the first time in four years. Amazement at that instantaneous response spiralled through her.

'Oh, I'd forgotten you must know him, your country and his being in the same neighbourhood.' Celeste sounded eager. 'Sexy Sheikh Tariq of Al Sarath.' She sighed gustily. 'I'd even consider taking on a couple of kids for the sake of a man like that. Not that I'll get the chance. They say he hasn't looked at another woman seriously since he lost his wife. They try but none of them last. Apparently he was devoted to her.'

With one final, lingering look at Tariq and his sons, Samira swung round, putting her back to them, letting Celeste's chatter wash over her.

She'd once thought Tariq her friend. She'd looked up to him and trusted him. He'd been as much a part of her life as her brother, Asim. But that friendship had been a mirage, as fragile as the shimmer of water on hot desert sands. He'd turned his back on her years ago with a suddenness that had mystified her, making her wonder what she'd done to alienate him or whether he'd just forgotten her in the press of responsibilities when he'd become Sheikh. When she'd been through hell four years previously she'd not heard a word from him.

Strange how much that still hurt.

Tariq had been in the crowded banqueting hall just three minutes when his sixth sense, the one that always twitched at a hint of trouble, switched into overdrive.

Casually he turned, keenly surveying the glamorous throng even as he returned greetings. He'd been plagued by a sense that something wasn't quite right all afternoon, since he returned to the hotel, but to his annoyance couldn't pinpoint any tangible reason. Just a disturbing sense that he'd missed something important.

It wasn't a sensation he liked. Tariq liked to be in control of his world.

The crowd shifted and through a gap he saw a sliver of deep scarlet. His gaze snagged. Another shift and the scarlet became a long dress, a beacon drawing his eyes to the sultry swell of feminine hips and a deliciously rounded bottom. The woman's skin, displayed by the low scoop of material at her back, was a soft gold, like the desert at first light. A drift of gleaming dark hair was caught up in an artfully casual arrangement that had probably taken hours to achieve. It was worth it, for it revealed the slender perfection of her elegant neck.

Tariq's body tightened, every tendon and muscle stiffening in a response that was profound, instinctive and utterly unexpected.

Light played on the sheen of her dress, lovingly detailing each curve.

He swallowed, realising suddenly that his mouth was dry. His blood flowed hot and fast, his heartbeat tripping to a new, urgent rhythm.

It was a rhythm he hadn't felt in years. Tariq frowned.

The woman turned and he took in the fitted dress that covered her from neck to toe. It enticed a man's imagination to wander over the slim frame and bounteous curves beneath the fabric.

He'd taken half a pace towards her when his eyes lifted to her face and he slammed to a stop, an invisible brick wall smashing into him, tearing the air from his lungs.

Samira.

Tariq heaved in a breath so deep it made his ribs ache.

Samira.

He breathed out, almost tasting the memories on his tongue.

But this wasn't Samira as he'd last seen her. This was a different woman: confident, sexy and experienced. A woman who was making her mark on the world.

For a moment he paused, drawn despite himself. Then his brain kicked into gear as he remembered all the reasons she wasn't for him, despite the tight ache gripping his lower body. He turned to the pretty blonde at his right who was half-wearing a gold sequinned dress. She looked up with wide, hopeful eyes that brimmed with excitement when he smiled down at her.

Minutes later she was leaning into him, her pale hand clutching his sleeve possessively, her eyes issuing an invitation as old as time.

Tariq made himself smile again, wondering if she realised or cared that his attention was elsewhere.

Samira watched him from the back of the crowd. Tariq was the obvious choice of speaker for the children's charity. He was a natural leader, holding the audience in the palm of his hand. Confident, articulate and witty, he effortlessly drew all eyes. Around her men nodded and women salivated and Samira had to repress indignation as they ate him up hungrily.

He was all she remembered: thoughtful, capable and caring, using his speech to reinforce the plight of the children they were here to help, yet keeping the tone just right to loosen the wallets of wealthy patrons.

She remembered a lanky youth who'd always been gentle with her, his friend's little sister. This Tariq was charismatic, with an aura of assured authority that he'd no doubt acquired from ruling his sheikhdom. She couldn't drag her eyes from his tall frame and the way it filled out his tuxedo with solid muscle and bone.

Samira gulped, disorientated at the sudden blast of longing that swamped her.

She blinked and looked up at his bold, handsome face, the glint of humour in his eyes, and remembered the way he'd been with his boys: gentle, loving and patient.

In that moment recognition hit. Recognition of what she wanted.

What she needed.

The family she longed for. Children to nurture and love. A partner she could respect and trust to share her life.

Eyes fixed on Tariq, she realised there was a way she could become part of a family. It was the perfect solution to her untenable situation. A solution not just for her, but potentially a win-win for all concerned. If she had the courage to pursue it.

The idea was so sudden, so outrageous, she swayed on her delicate heels, her heart thumping high in her throat, her stomach twisting hard and sharp.

'Are you sure you're all right?' Celeste grabbed her elbow as if afraid she'd topple over. 'You weren't yourself this afternoon either.'

'I'm…' Samira gulped, swallowing shock at the revelation confronting her. 'I'm okay, thanks. Just a little tired.'

Celeste nodded and turned back to Tariq. 'He's a little overwhelming, isn't he? Especially in formal dress. I swear, if he wasn't a king someone would snap him up as a model.'

Samira pressed her hand against her churning stomach, only half-listening.

She stared at the powerful figure on the podium and the voice of self-doubt, the voice that had ruled the first twenty-five years of her life, told her she was crazy. Crazy to think about wanting what she could never have. After all, she and Tariq hadn't been friends for years. There was no guarantee he'd even listen to her.

But another part of her applauded. The part that had grown stronger in the last four years, nurtured by her family and her determination to drag herself out of the mire of despair and make something of her life. The voice of the survivor she'd become.

She knew what she wanted.

Why not go for it?

Yet instinctively she shied away from such an action.

Absolutely beautiful
By Lucy Waterhouse
With The Sheikh’s Princess Bride, Annie West once again proves she’s the queen of romance. All of her books are written with such attention to detail and astonishing character development that they envelop you and you become completely engrossed in the story right from the beginning. Annie’s writing has a delicious fluency that keeps me turning the pages without regard to the passage of time until I reach the end.

We met Princess Samira of Jazeer in Annie West’s The Sheikh’s Harem Bride from the Desert Vows duo where she was a broken woman hiding from the media. This is her turn to stop hovering in the shadows after her devastating experience with her previous lover and shine.

Sheikh Tariq of Al-Sarath, is a good friend of Samira’s brother - Sultan Asim of Jazeer and has known Samira since she was a child. Attraction between the two was always there but the timing had not been right. Now, Samira’s fashion design label has become a success professionally but Samira longs for a family – someone to belong to. By chance she reconnects with Tariq who is now a widower with twin small sons who need a mother. Samira believes she is unable to have children of her own so she proposes to Tariq that she marries him on one condition – it’s to be a marriage in name only!

This is a beautiful journey from the arid deserts of Al- Sarath to the glamour of Paris. Samira is captivated with Tariq’s sons, Risay and Adil and the more time she spends with Tariq, the deeper their relationship grows into something beautiful and complimenting. There are some misunderstandings and an extraordinary surprise that has the relationship teetering but Annie West expertly weaves her magic to bring this marriage of convenience to its happily ever after.

Samira and Tariq's story was absolutely beautiful. Their slow burning romance left me enchanted and content. The Sheikh’s Princess Bride has fantastic writing, a distinctive and romantic storyline, and an emotional pull that kept me hooked from page one.

Sexy and sweet - a must read!
By Sally Schmidt
The Sheikh’s Harem Bride is the second in Annie West’s Desert Vows series, following The Sultan’s Harem Bride. I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Somehow I forgot or didn’t realize that this was a sequel, so imagine my delight when it dawned on me that I would be spending a little more time with Jacqui and Asim (who are of course living happily ever after) and now in this book get a closer look at Samira. It’s a wonder she survived the terrible childhood she and Asim had. And then when she gave her heart and love and body to a man who professed to love her, he treated her shabbily and left her shattered and determined never to risk love again. Jacqui and Asim helped her to get back on her feet, but I wanted to know if she was really doing as well as it seemed at the end of The Sultan’s Harem Bride. And the answer is no, she’s not.

As for Tariq, no time is wasted making you see how stunningly charismatic he is and to want to know him better. When I read of his slow smile with a sexy groove down one cheek I had an OMG moment. His long, quick strike that made her think of her dressmaker’s shears cutting through rich velvet put the perfect picture in my mind. He was raised to be a king, taught that love has no place. But he is very haunted by his first wife’s death.

Tariq and Asim were boyhood friends in neighboring kingdoms, and little sister Samira was right there. So Samira knows him and feels - and hopes - she can trust him to give her the peace and the family she craves – but under her conditions. The electricity starts crackling between them right away, but you aren’t sure just what is behind it and if it will be good or bad for their future. She is a princess so knows how to be a queen, she loves and wants children so she will be a wonderful mother, but the wife part, not so sure about that.

This is just a joyous story to read. It’s oh so sexy but oh so sweet at the same time. Tariq and Samira are both so honorable and trying so hard to care for and honor the other, but to protect themselves from their pasts as well. They are each certain they know what the other is thinking and wants, and therefore become almost frozen in their attempts to do the right thing.

From the reader’s perspective what Tariq and Samira should do seems simple and obvious, but to them it’s not, and that’s the charm of it

This was a great read and I strongly recommend it. In fact, you should read all of Annie West’s books, but especially this one. Once you start it will be too good to put down. And when I looked at the back of the book and saw “Category – Passion” I thought no kidding.

The Sheikh Takes a Bride
By Rosemary
Sheikh Tariq of Al-Sarath is a powerful ruler and an honorable man. He loves his boys and knows they need a woman in their life. Samira asks him to marry her so that she can take care of his toddlers, he's shocked. He always cared for this alluring woman. He can't believe that she wants a marriage of convenience. Where will this arrangement take them? I loved the heated sexual tension between Tariq and Samira. She's a feisty woman who has vowed never to give her heart to an uncaring man. She knows the pain of betrayal. The Sheikh doesn't want to commit to a woman when he can't give her his heart. He feels guilt that he never loved Jasmin. Not in the way he cares for Samira. The attraction between these two is very sensual. The lush desert kingdom and the witty dialogue create a perfect setting for this passionate romance. I loved this story. It appealed to my heart and mind. Annie West wrote a love story that was filled with well written characters that drew me in. When I finished reading The Sheikh's Princess Bride, I was happy that these lovers were together.
