Helpful Addition to the End of Life Genre
By Faye Girsh
As someone who's been in the right to die field for many years I still find it confusing about what to advise people about the best way to have a peaceful death when help from a doctor is unobtainable, as it is for most people around the world. Chabot's new addition to the collection that Derek Humphry correctly lists, I found to be a further clarification of the major methods with more scientific evidence, clarification of some of the more dubious methods that people talk about, and a clear description of what is needed. He explores what the criteria are for deciding on which method is workable and compares information from several sources. Chabot, in the Netherlands -- where, as he point out, the laws are most liberal -- presents an excellent analysis of the need for information for those who want a self-chosen, humane death (a good term he employs) outside the law when a doctor will not help or when the person wants to retain control. He looks into the future when the number of old people and patients with long-term chronic disease and impending dementia will engulf the medical profession with their needs to die peacefully. Taking it out of the hands of already reluctant doctors and empowering individuals, families, and professional end-of-life counselors with this information is the wave of the future, as Derek Humphry did with his pioneering, Final Exit. This book, though quite accessible to the lay reader, offers more scientific data and embeds the information in an historical and somewhat philosophical context. That there is a flurry of these do-it-yourself guides indicates people's hunger for a choice of workable methods for self-empowerment. It is too bad that so many of these techniques still require underground, often illegal, access.

patients with terminal - and often very painful - diseases are subjected to rounds of technical interventions ...
By Sidney R. Adelman
With the exception of a few states in the United States, patients with terminal - and often very painful - diseases are subjected to rounds of technical interventions that prolong their lives but do not provide any quality during the prolongation. Many of these patients want an easy and dignified death but have no where to turn. This book provides answers and methods that are clear and easily understood, in a way, recipes for success.

The book also includes methods and medications to avoid that can cause additional suffering including brain damage so they can be easily crossed off a list that you might have been considering.

An already crowded genre
By Derek Humphry
This is the seventh such guidebook in the now well-worn genre of self-chosen death advice (plus there have been numerous pamphlets) starting from l983.
For those interested in updating their knowledge of modern Dutch societal attitudes and methods on euthanasia, this book is a good source. Otherwise, there is much elaborate data of the known how-to ways (some questionable) but no new how-to information.
The 6 other how-to guide books, available on Amazon new or used books:
1. Let Me Die Before I Wake (1983) Humphry; 2. Final Exit (1991) Humphry;
3. Peaceful Pill Handbook (2006) Nitschke; 4. Five Last Acts (2007) Docker;
5. The Best Way to Say Goodbye (2006) Terman; 6. Guide to a humane self-chosen Death (2006) Admiraal et al.
