The third in crown Point Press's series on printmaking, this book does exactly what it says on the cover. Its meticulous, step-by-step approach means that even printmakers who are confident with aquatint will find it helpful. The book is like a Russian doll in its presentation of the technique-each chapter revealing a different aspect of the process. While it can sometimes seem a little short of illustrations, the excellent text more than compensates. The 'how to' descriptions are also richly supported by the masterful images that the author has chosen to exemplify particular effects. Many are the work of some very famous artists: Al Held, Ed Ruscha, Tony Cragg, Elaine De Kooning and Francesco Clemente among them. Crown Point Press is, after all, among the most celebrated of all American print studios. Whether you are a lover of aquatint or among those who have often found themselves frustrated by it, this is the book for you. About the Author
Master Printer Emily York came to Crown Point Press after training as a printer at Paulson Press, a printmaking press in Berkeley founded by two former Crown Point master printers. Emily was born in Napa, California and grew up in St. Helena, in the Napa Valley. She received her BA in art with an emphasis on printmaking from the University of California at Santa Cruz. She pursues her own artwork and crafts at home in Oakland, CA.

Thorough and complete

This is a wonderful reference book, absolutely worth every penny. I can't think of another book that goes into such precise and specific detail on aquatint, and the DVD is a helpful counterpart to the step by step instructions and beautiful, high quality illustrations. If you are serious about learning these techniques or want a reference this is an ideal choice.

This is the best printmaking book ever. I had to buy the chin colle book after I went through this one. This is crown point presses top selling book. This will get you through etching class and then some. I'm building steel facing tank from the information in this book. It teaches you everything.

About the Author
PAUL STAMETS is the founder of Fungi Perfecti and codirector and founder of the Rainforest Mushroom Genome and Mycodiversity Preservation Project. He is the author of two seminal textbooks, The Mushroom Cultivator and GROWING GOURMET AND MEDICINAL MUSHROOMS, has been published in numerous journals, and is presenting more lectures on mycology than he can keep track of. An advisor and consultant to the Program for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona Medical School and the 1998 recipient of the Collective Heritage Institute’s Bioneers Award, Stamets lives in Kamilche Point, Washington with his collection of more than 250 medicinal mushroom cultures.

Buy it. Read it. Grow it. Eat it. With no cholesterol!

The only issue I have with this book is that Paul is operating on such a grand scale. Much of his ideas and suggestions, though absolutely sound, need to be downsized if intended to be applied by this reader. Not a big issue for me, as the foundational understanding is what I was truly after, and this book provides that. I plan to read it again once I've finished with the author's other book, Mycelium Running. If you don't have that book yet, quit screwing around and go buy it. Such a good read! And for those gardeners among us (like me), pair this and Mycelium Running with Teaming with Microbes (Lownfels&Lewis) and Teaming with Nutrients (Lowenfels). There are a lot of books, but these have all been great for me in my pursuit of a healthier food source for my family. Atherosclerosis is a killer, people. Source your protein better. Paul will show you how.

Not for the beginner

I was looking for something I could read as a beginner to start growing my own mushrooms, this book is not it. It is however jam packed full of information, but is just somewhat difficult to sift through all of it an get a good understanding on what I am doing without a bunch of reading....this book is way thicker than I had imagined it would be. If you are looking for a book on mushrooms and have a good background on them and looking to fine tune your skills this would be helpful for you. If your are like me and just looking to get started I would choose something less confusing.

you need to get 3 books in the series, Mycelium Running, The Mushroom Cultivator, MycoMedicinals, and this book, growing gourmet and medicinal mushrooms! u need to have a small library of books if ur going to do it right. Here is a very practical book for growing them on a small scale, like at home, like me!! its "the essential guide to "Cultivating Mushrooms"< in big letters on the cover! by Stephen Russell !! this is an excellent practical book, in plain English, not so much in technical names, and it very good at showing exactly how to do it !! the other 3 go in to more detail, if u want to know more, but this last books tells it how it is in real life and in your backyard or basement. you will never know how good or bad it is, if u don't start ordering some soon! u may pick up only 1 tip from a whole book, but that tip maybe the key to ur success or ur failure!
that's the cost of doing business!!

Great Study Guide for the PE Exam

I got this to study for the PE Exam in Water Resources. This is a great book that is clear and concise with great step by step explanations of the solutions unlike a lot of other practice exam books that skip steps, or don’t show you how they got their solution, or used a convoluted and obscure way to solve the problem that will take you more than six minutes. This book focuses on how to get to the answer quickly and clearly. I have the NCEES, PPI, Six-Minute solutions and a couple of other PE practice test books and I have to say this one will be one of the more useful ones for me get prepared for the PE Exam.

As a PE Civil review course instructor, I am always telling my students the #1 way to pass the exam is to practice problems. If you are serious about mastering the Water Resources portion of the Civil PE exam, Water Resources Practice Problems is a perfect companion to help you prepare for the exam. A bonus is that the difficulties of the problems are on the level of the actual exam, making the book a practical and worthy purchase.

Excellent, needs on-line errata

Problems are consistent with the type and difficulty that you will see on the PE exam: none of the obscure PPI questions on denitrifying activated sludge reactors on the moon or other ridiculous topics, just what you will realistically see on the exam. However, the author does throw a few [manageable] curve-balls to get you on top of your game going into the PE exam and re-familiarize some topics that may have been overlooked by other review materials (PPI materials; Six-Minute Solutions; NCEES practice exams). Only negative comment is there are a few typos (transposed numbers) in the solution and an online or easily-accessible errata is lacking to address these typos. Hands down, better bang-for-your-buck than the PPI materials.

McDonald now applies his considerable talents to a study of another venerable institution-the American presidency.

Writing at the height of his powers as an intellectual historian, McDonald explores how and why the presidency has evolved into such a complex and powerful institution, unlike any other in the world. Scores of republics have come into existence during the last two centuries and many have adopted constitutions similar to our own. But, as McDonald persuasively shows, the American presidency is unique-no other nation has a leadership position that combines the seemingly incongruous roles of ceremonial head of state and chief executive magistrate.

Lacking an acceptable role model, McDonald explains, the founding fathers constructed their idea of the presidency from sources as diverse as the Bible, Machiavelli, John Locke, the Ancient Greeks and Romans, the laws of England, and the early colonial and state government experiences. So many influences, he suggests, guaranteed a substantial degree of persistent ambiguity and contradiction in the office.

McDonald chronicles the presidency's creation, implementation, and evolution and explains why it's still working today despite its many perceived afflictions. Along the way, he provides trenchant commentary upon the Constitutional Convention, ratification debates, presidencies of Washington and Jefferson, presidential administration and leadership, presidential-congressional conflicts, the president as chief architect of foreign policy, and the president as myth and symbol. He also analyzes the enormous gap between what we've come to expect of presidents and what they can reasonably hope to accomplish.

Ambitious, comprehensive, and engaging, this is the best single-volume study of an institution that has become troubled and somewhat troublesome yet, in McDonald's words, "has been responsible for less harm and more good than perhaps any other secular institution in history." It will make a fine and necessary companion for understanding the presidency as it moves into its third century.

This should be required reading for the entire American populace

Mr. McDonald, in his excellent book, traces the theory and practice of the presidency from Washington to Clinton. The theme is a comparison of constitutional writings and the framers' intent, an area in which McDonald is expert, compared with the actual events on the ground. The oval-office push for ever increasing amounts of power, dubbed the "Imperial Presidency" during the Nixon administration, is behavior that did not originate with 20th century presidents. McDonald argues that congress bears much if not most of the responsibility in that it has, decade by decade, abdicated its constitutional responsibilities in many areas, creating a partial vacuum into which the presidency has stepped. McDonald points out the large number of undeclared wars presidents, stretching back to Jefferson, have begun with no objection from congress. Lest we have forgotten, the ability to declare war was vested in congress to prevent presidents from "expeditioning" abroad.

The book is heavily footnoted, but that is not a distraction. The bulk of the focus is on the first decades of this country's existence and the historic background to the creation of the office of "President." Much effort has gone into detailing the philosophy considered by the framers. Our constitution was, after all, written during the "Age of Reason." This background is, at least in part, the reason the book is subtitled "An Intellectual History."

The difficulties in defining the role of the president are part of why most democracies opt for a parliamentary style government. Another huge issue, as Lincoln demonstrated by completely ignoring the constitution he claimed to be upholding in the Civil War, is that if the troops remain loyal to the president, the American system of checks and balances can be destroyed much more easily (at least in theory) than in parliament in which the prime minister's coalition could remove him from power.

This book is another of Professor McDonald's carefully researched and well-written series on the foundations of our nation and our government. It is truly a "must read."

Great book on the history of the presidency by the inimitable Professor McDonald. The book begins with how the framers were influenced by English law and the history of the executive (ie king and prime minister) up to that point in history. Realize that had there been no George Washington, the framers would have been reluctant to create an executive position that is now known as the presidency.

Great at the Creation, Dubious in the Present

Prof. McDonald clearly knows his 18th century stuff. The bulk of this book is solidly grounded in his earlier work on the Constitutional convention, the framers, and the early presidents (especially George Washington). But his later discussion of the growth of the presidency is much less well linked to current literature or with historical fact. So: a must read for the "intellectual origins" parts of the book, but much less essential for the present day. For that, try Richard Pious' or Tom Cronin's work.

Excellent alternative to US based books on control theory

Most books I have on control theory are written by US authors and tend on the whole to be very similar in content especially the more modern ones. This book however was written by an author from India and therefore the perspective is slightly different, including additional theorems I was unaware of. This is a good thing. In the past Indian books tended to be printed rather cheaply but this book is of good quality.

A book with no-nonsense tactics that will help you improve your email communication skills

Despite the huge advances in communications and the little improvement in email systems, email is here to stay. �And it makes sense, because email remains one of the most effective and frictionless form of communications.�

Reading, writing, and answering emails consumes a significant amount of everybody's time.
According to a 2012 McKinsey study cited by Osman, the average US worker spends 28% of his/her workweek reading and responding to email. �Most people recognize that they should do something about how they deal with mail, the actual number of people taking some real action is small.�

This book is not about managing your inbox --no "inbox zero" pretentions here--, but about down-to-earth tactics to help you and your team become better and more effective communicators. � The value of the book is not in its novelty --"There’s nothing earth-shattering about the contents of this book. �In fact, many of my tips are common sense that you’ve probably read somewhere before"-- but in that it offers proven best practices that you can adopt immediately, and that you can share with your team.

The tactics can be divided in two groups, tactics 1 to 5 being the most important and effective ones. �"If you take away a handful of lessons from this entire book, they should be those five tactics. They are your 80/ 20—the 20% of actions that will produce 80% of your results." �These 5 tactics are about how to write meaninful subject lines, keeping the content of your emails short and to the point, and assigning tasks using the "3W"s:

�– The�Who. Use the name of a single person of the name of the persons, don't adress people using "all", "team", etc.
�
– The What. �Don't be ambiguous and avoid making assumptions.

– The When. �The exact time and date a task needs to be completed by. �Always use a deadline, even if it's fake.

The remaining 13 tactics in the book cover other no-nonsense advice like �why you should steer away from asking open-ended questions in mails, how to use delayed delivery for sending emails when they are most likely to be read, and the maybe the most important one: �do not hit reply-all when only the original sender needs to read your message.

Hassan Osman has vast experience managing projects with large, geographically distributed teams. �His previous book, Influencing Virtual Teams, offered no-nonsense tactics to help you managing your team. �I think his new book Don't Reply All will �benefit anybody whose work involves using email for communicating with coworkers and clients.

Short and simple but effective tactics for better emails

Even with my college degree in English, I still find writing effective emails to be a challenge. Even when I think I've crafted the perfect request, I'm surprised by the recipients who didn't understand. Thanks to this short but informative book, I have identified several issues to address. In my work, I deal with many complex emails due to contracts and regulations, and I love the idea of using subheadings. Not sure why I didn't think of that. The "3Ws" will become my mantra "who, what, when" (assign work to individuals, give exact tasks, and set deadlines even if they are not in stone). I've also asked my boss if we can use his quick summary handout for internal training. I strongly urge you to spend an hour reading "Don't Reply All." Even if you don't learn something new, you will find validation if you are currently practicing some of these tactics.

Crisp, clear, and informative

The author of Influencing Virtual Teams: 17 Tactics That Get Things Done with Your Remote Employees is back. Hassan has a very crisp and clear style. If you'd like to learn good tactics for better email etiquette, pick up this book. He lays each part of the book out very clearly.

When I worked at a software company, the primary method of communication was e-mail, as is the case for most of corporate America. It felt like I was constantly being bombarded with emails. I think that a lot of people would benefit from reading this book.

Thank you, Dr. Miller!

I came to this book at the recommendation of a physician as I struggle to help my teenage daughter manage her gut-driven autoimmune issues, which include food sensitivity-driven hyper permeable gut and anaphylactic shock and multiple incidents of anaphylactic shock, and most recently a severe and life-altering vasculitis. Her rheumatologist, immunologist, and gastroenterologist call her the mystery girl, but her integrative physician told us to focus on food and what her body tells us. Enter Farmacology, which is life changing for my family. We already ate "organic" and thought we were keeping heavy doses of hormones, antibiotics, processing/chemicals, modern gluten, and processed sugar out of her and our bodies. After reading Farmacology, I'm convinced we aren't, and that we're missing vital microbes and even helpful bacterias etc., so we're refocusing on knowing our food growers and growing food ourself in a more biodynamic model, and on eliminating the heavily homogenized/pasteurized milk sold on our chain stores shelves in favor of locally sourced and less processed milk, and less of it altogether. There's so much I could say about the intelligence, curiosity, common sense, caring, and readability of this book, but I'm sure you get the picture: I loved it and appreciated it. Highly recommended.

I basically just want to agree with the majority here. This is a wonderful book full of information that all of us should be learning about the foods we are eating, and how better to grow it. The forays into her meetings with those she interviews for the book are delightful.

The only reason I dropped it to 4 stars was to warn those that haven't done any research on food, gardening, or even organic gardening and how it affects our health may find it a tad too technical. I had some problems grasping a few of the ideas. But then again that's why I liked it so much. It made me want to go out and find more answers when I had questions.

I definitely agree with the reviews that hope that more in the medical community will read and heed the advice in this book!

To be fair I did pick this up on a phenomenal sale on Amazon for $1.99. I'm not sure if I would have gambled on it at full price. But I would have missed out tremendously if I hadn't!

Fascinating book. Highly recommended for healthcare workers like me.

As a specialist physician, I am far-removed from preventative and holistic medicine. In addition, I have been trained to evaluate and treat patients in a very compartmentalized fashion. Reading Dr. Miller's book allowed me to see disease and my own health in a fresh way. I enjoyed her personal style and appreciated her ability to integrate varied health issues into a cohesive work.

Excellent reference book for shoulder therapists!

I am an occupational therapist and have been attending courses sponsored by the St. Francis Orthopaedic Institute for many years. I have always come away from these courses with new knowledge about the shoulder, practical tips for clinical application and renewed inspiration for treating my shoulder patients. Now the same surgeons and therapists who have been presenting at these courses have finally put their knowledge, experience and research into this fabulous hard cover book that is an easy reference in a busy clinic. It is worthwhile to take the time to read and study the chapters that relate to the shoulder patients you are treating. You will find all the details you need to fully understand specific shoulder conditions and the rationale behind the best way to treat them. When you are in a hurry and need a jump start on a new patient, you can also quick-reference the protocols outlined at the end of each chapter which give week-by-week guidelines for specific exercises to do with specific diagnoses. I love this book! It is comprehensive and evidence-based but still easy to read and the rehab principles all make good sense. It is packed full of absolutely beautiful color photos and medical illustrations, the best I've ever seen. If you are treating shoulder patients in your practice this book is a must-have!

Extensive clinical knowledge, evidence-based foundation, and illustrations for every clinician to read, reference, and apply

This book ranks as high as any compendium on the market today for clinical evidence-based research. Clinical experience from contributing authors spans hundreds of years. They have participated in an enormous amount of research to create this logical, current, highlighted, and systematic approach to shoulder rehabilitation. Photography and anatomical illustrations of the shoulder, related structures, and surgical procedures are superb, revealing some of Carol Capers best work at "simplifying" the oftentimes complexed, surgical anatomy of the shoulder.
I bought this book as soon as it was available. Having practiced over 35 years in the athletic training and physical therapy professions, it is certainly one of the best "go-to" books in my reference library. The clinical pearls vividly display key points and specific guidelines regarding rehabilitation for various shoulder problems. Additionally, and critically important, all patients, family, and even other medical personnel deserve to know "what" therapists are doing and "why" we are applying certain rehabilitation principles during our course of treatment and rehabilitation. Protocols for various nonoperative, pre-operative, and post-operative shoulder diagnoses are staged in easy-to-follow timeframes to apply and explain in an orderly progression.
I highly recommend "A Systematic Approach to Shoulder Rehabilitation." All clinicians who deal with upper extremity problems, including physicians, therapists, and other allied personnel will benefit from this valuable resource. It would also be useful to have this book as a part of a physical therapy or athletic training curriculum.
