Decent Attempt at a Difficult Task
By Aeries
As a fan of the game, and a fan of the Elven/Eldar races in particular, I understand that it is definitely hard to balance their alien/otherness with having understandable characters and plots. I mention this because, while it was a decent try, I just wasn't happy with the balance of explanation and exposition with mystery, which seemed inconsistent. That is, there were some aspects of the story or background which were only alluded to and remained veiled, while other aspects were explained in too much detail.
I was also disappointed by the plot and focus of the novel as a story. The story lines I found the most interesting, like Sindiel's and Morr's, were kept peripheral; it's understandable - the story is about the bad guys and Sindiel is not one. I'm hoping Morr gets a good treatment (as it looks like he will) in Path of the Incubus.
This novel looks to definitely be the first part of a series; as such, it's not that great on its own, but I am also looking forward to seeing what follows, for which, this will probably be required reading.

Unquenched Thirst
By Neil Herron
Path of the Renegade is one of those rare books where the vast majority of characters would be considered reprehensible human beings, good thing they are all Dark Eldar. For those unfamiliar with the Dark Eldar I have no idea how you stumbled onto this book but welcome! In a nut shell they are malicious members of an unfathomably old civilization who are on the verge of going extinct. Every major character in this book, short of one, is interested in increasing their wealth/power/forbidden knowledge. It is almost refreshing to read a story where you do not particularly like anyone yet find yourself rooting for one character over another.
The action is solid but the politics is what makes this book so good. I tend to dislike villains yet when confronted with a book full of nothing but villains I found myself hooked. Though this is the first book in a planned trilogy the ending was satisfying. I would recommend this book even to people who know nothing about Warhammer 40,000.

great book! no cliff hanger
By jay
I got to say first of the end of this book ends! and thank god! I think that was the problem with another 40K book I bought. If I put 400 pages of reading time into a book I at least think I deserve a solid ending.
It is a bit alternative, I like how it dips into the world of the dark elder. It is a big gory and gruesome at times and I feel like some of the chapters are just trying to make you chringe, but what else can you expect about a book of the dark elder.
