About the Author
ANTHONY POWELL was born in 1905. After working in publishing and as a scriptwriter, he began to write for the Daily Telegraph in the mid-1930s. He served in the army during World War II and subsequently became the fiction reviewer on the TLS. Next came five years as literary editor of Punch. He was appointed a Companion of Honour in 1988. In addition to the twelve-novel sequence, A Dance to the Music of Time, Anthony Powell was the author of seven other novels, and four volumes of memoirs, To Keep the Ball Rolling. He died in March 2000.

I love A Dance to the Music of Time and sought out this early work of Powell's in the hope of recapturing the sparkling repartee and zest for living that makes Dance so delectable. Better luck next time. This slight (150 page) farce concerns a young British wastrel, Lushington (get it?), who, for lack of anything better, goes off on a slow steamer to a Northern Baltic country that has been recently liberated after the Great War (think, oh, I don't know, Latvia or something). There on the boat he meets most of the novel's principal characters: a down-at-the-heels count, a fake fat count who sells soap and a vamp countess. These tired drawing-room caricatures, which must have been cliched at the time, spend the rest of the novel wasting away and finally relieving the reader by dying from consumption, confrontation, revolution or irresolution (except for the fat count who steams back to England in the interest of soaping up the British Isles). There's a tiresome party or two with the kind of conversation that makes one wonder how did Powell become the writer who created those wonderful, festive scenes in Dance. I'm thinking he had some kind of literary equivalent of Paul's journey on the road to Damascus (or at least became a born-again writer). In any event, this book is strictly for hardcore Powellians (or, perhaps, pole-cats) interested in the great writer's roots and willing to forgive a youthful transgression into the wilds of stuffy, Northern European aristocracy.

A very great read!

I read this book right after Waugh's Brideshead Revisited, and this book, about half the length of the other, is far superior. I believe this was only Powell's second novel. A funny, confused protagonist named Lushington finds himself in a small former Soviet colony of beautiful society ladies, with ultimately tragic (but, yes, funny) and unsatisfying outcomes. He even blows his heroic welcome home party. It's Powell at his best, writing about parties, parties and more parties of the rich and famous, intertwined with real drama, a nice, tight mixture in a little book.

About the Author

Jesse Liberty is a Microsoft Senior Program Manager where he is responsible for the creation of tutorials, videos and other content to facilitate the learning and use of Silverlight. Even before joining Microsoft, Jesse was well known in the industry in part because of his many bestselling books, including O'Reilly Media's Programming .NET 3.5, Programming C# 3.0, Learning ASP.NET with AJAX and the soon to be published Programming Silverlight.

Brian MacDonald has edited programming and networking books for major publishers on topics ranging from securing Windows servers to PHP web programming to running an eBay business. He also coauthored O'Reilly's Learning C# 2005 and Learning ASP.NET 2.0 with AJAX.

See how sharp you can get

I would highly recommend this text to anyone approaching programming or the .NET programming environment for the first time. Not only does this book prepare you for the rigors of object-oriented programming in C#, but Jesse Liberty and Brian MacDonald also give you a working introduction to the .NET framework.

C# is the language that Bjarne Stroustrup was referring to when he said that there was a language in C++ just waiting to get out. If you get rid all the weird syntax and conventions of C++ and add some really useful programming tools, what you have is C#. The fact that C# is a totally object-oriented languge standing on the shoulders of .NET makes it a logically coherent programming system. Spock probably used it on the Enterprise. Add the Integrated Development Envirionment and you can actually enjoy programming again.

The introduction to .NET in this text is so painless that you won't even feel the needle going in. Once you get that first shot, you'll be hungering for more. Liberty and MacDonald are careful not to let you OD, and provide the necessary and sufficient information to take yourself comfortably to the next level in that most dynamic of programming environments. Oh, and did I mention that the examples in the text are well thought out - and that they actually work! If you are new to programming or new to .NET, this book is for you. Even if you've programmed for years, you might want to read this book - just to witness how writing a book about "how to program" should be done.

Not Only For Beginners!

OREILLY does wonderful jobs producing Nutshell books.

This is my 2nd book by Jesse (1st one is programming asp.net), and it still looks like another nutshell book to me.

Language basics are handled by the book easily, but it lacks sufficient explainations on some basic .net issues. I like chap 14 (Generics and Collections), it really taught me a lot about how .net framework handles various kind of lists and iterators. However, the thing is that these microsoft quirks are not easy to understand!! Interface inheritance, overriden functions and numerous other concepts. I spent quite a few hours on this single chapter!! For some technical details, it simple refers you to MSDN...

Overall, some parts of the book are good for beginner, while others are valuable to some intermediate level .Net coders.

Sometimes I really hate Microsoft, since it always packages some simple programming concepts up into its own, and give them some new names. This kind of work will simply trip you up!! Once you got the idea behind the scene, you will find it's just that simple!! Why the heck does microsoft have to make all these so convoluated??!!

A new edition without much new, but that's ok

This diachronic presentation of Christian spiritualies, in its former edition, served well as a text for several years in my undergraduate theology class in a Catholic university. Students respond well to it as a guide. The new edition keeps the same faithful perspective and rich selection of material, with a nod to developments brewing in the 21st century.

The best thing, I suppose, is that it now has a contemporary copyright date and makes some adjustments to time language. Maybe that will give it new staying power, which is a good thing.

About the Author

Fiona Copland is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Languages and Social Sciences at Aston University, Birmingham where she is Director of� CLERA (Centre for Language Education Research at Aston).� Before working in higher education, she was an English language teacher in Nigeria, Hong Kong, Japan and the UK, where she also taught on a range of teacher education programmes.� This background has influenced her research interests which include talk in pre-service teacher education conferences and teaching English to young learners, and she has published in these areas.� Since attending a course in ethnography, language and communication jointly run by King’s College University of London and the Institute of Education University of London, she has been an active member of the Linguistic Ethnography Forum, co-organising three conferences.�� At Aston, Fiona is the Programmes Director of MSc TESOL courses and teaches a range of post-graduate modules.� She also supervises PhD students in the field of TESOL.�

Angela Creese is Professor of Educational Linguistics at the School of Education, University of Birmingham, and deputy director of the MOSAIC Centre for Research on Multilingualism. In the last ten years she has been funded to work in large multilingual research teams to research multilingualism. �Her research interests are in linguistic ethnography, language ecologies, multilingualism in society and multilingual classroom pedagogy. If you are a fan of socilogical theory and wish to expand your knowledge of the labeling theory concept this book is a good place to start. These 42 case studies provide close examination into the "Careers" of Deviants, offering insights as to how society, through sanctions and stigmatization, molds and shapes each individual's projected path into deviance. the majority of the authors presented rely on Goffman's and Becker's work, but in doing so offer new and expanded theories as to why deviance occurs . A good read.
