I once had a copy of the first edition of this book and loaned it out--of course it was never returned. The second edition is updated with even more information. Dale Clemens was not only a first rate rod builder, but was also the owner of what was, at the time the largest rod building supply business in the country.

The book has a lot of information on rod components tested by the company before it was offered for sale in their catalog. Some of the information is dated, but most of it is still germane today. Every rod builder should have a copy of this book on their reference shelf.

Everything you might want to know and then some.

So far, this book covers building fly rods from beginning to end and as I said, then some. There is a lengthy discussion of how the blanks are made and the reasons why some cost more than others (I thought that was particularly interesting).
You will probably sit down and read sections at a time, not straight through from beginning to end.

About the Author
Patrick Hurley was born in Spokane, Washington in 1942. He received his bachelor's degree in mathematics (with a second major in philosophy and a physics minor) from Gonzaga University in 1964 and his Ph.D. in philosophy of science with an emphasis in history of philosophy from Saint Louis University in 1973. In 1972, he began teaching at the University of San Diego, where his courses included logic, philosophy of science, metaphysics, process philosophy, and legal ethics. In 1987, he received his J.D. from the University of San Diego, and he is currently a member of the California Bar Association. He retired from teaching in 2008, but continues his research and writing, including work on A Concise Introduction to Logic. His interests include music, art, opera, environmental issues, fishing, and skiing. He is married to Dr. Linda Peterson, who retired from teaching philosophy at the University of San Diego in 2015.

Lori Watson was born in Frankfurt, Germany in 1972. She received her bachelor's degree in philosophy and political science from Virginia Tech in 1994, a Master's of Arts in philosophy from Virginia Tech in 1996, and a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Illinois-Chicago in 2004. She was assistant professor of philosophy at Eastern Michigan University from 2004-2007; in 2007, she moved to the University of San Diego. She is currently professor of philosophy and chair of the philosophy department at the University of San Diego, where she regularly teaches logic, legal ethics, and sex equality. Her research interests lie at the intersection of political philosophy, feminism, and law. She has recently completed a book entitled Feminist Political Liberalism (with Dr. Christie Hartley) and is working on a book entitled Debating Sex Work. She enjoys spending time with her wife, Michelle Watson, and her two dogs Nikki and Grace.

The young Ramses stared the bull in the face. He was afraid. The bull was so fierce. The young prince turned to his father, Seti I, for help. "You're sending me to my death", cried the young boy. The pharaoh responded "You must become the light of your people, shining like the sun. You were hidden in my hand like a star; today I am setting you free. To shine-or to vanish!" Thus would begin the long and vibrant career of Egypt's greatest pharaoh. The first of a five-volume set, Christian Jacq's novel of the life of Ramses the Great begins with the king's early life in Egypt.
The supremely confident prince thought he was certain to succeed his father to the Horus Throne, but he was the only one who did. His brother, Shanaar, was the designated heir and he was jealous of his younger brother. His teacher said his name isn't even mentioned in court circles. He was told to leave town. Yet the prince was driven toward power and would never settle for anything less. He had a friend who felt the same way. A fire inside him driving him toward something great. That man was Moses. Even at a young age he began questioning the gods and was troubled by dreams he couldn't understand.
Life would not be easy for the young prince. He would face many obstacles that would put his life in danger. His father was an enigma to him-leaving him to believe he was testing him for greatness and then abandoning him. If he was the Son of Light he would have to battle the forces of darkness and they would come from people very close to him.
In ancient Egyptian culture the pharaoh was the protector of ma'at, the protector of order. To prove he was worthy of the honor he would have to prove it in the great battleground of Egypt. It would be order against chaos; light against darkness; and those storm clouds would gather threatening to consume the light before it had a chance to shine.
Christian Jacq weaves together an exciting tale, based on the life of Ramses II of Egypt. This was the time of Moses and we're introduced to him as a young teenage friend of the Prince. It was also the time of the battle of Troy and in Greek mythology Menelaus and Helen were forced by a great storm to the shores of Egypt. Jacq even has Homer conversing with the Crown Prince sharing his stories and philosophy with him. Finally, there is the living pharaoh, Seti I, who is seen as the gentle and wise ruler imparting his wisdom to his son. It is an exciting beginning to what promises to be one the ancient world's most gloriest of times.

Ramses for Dummies

This book only works for kids (13 at most). Maybe it is translator's fault, but the language reminded me of a comic book. I guess I am used to the prose of Pauline Gedge who submerges the reader into the mysteries of ancient Egypt. Ramses is more of a fairy tale-like simplification with a primitive dialog that can be heard in a modern junior high school. (who could have ever called a royal prince a "dummy"! ) As I said, it may work for kids, but if you are over 13, don't bother!

Pulp fiction dressed up as historical fiction

As a lover of historic novels set in ancient times, I can only say that this novel is simply pulp fiction and cannot even be termed as a historical novel.
I sincerely regret the time spent ordering it from the library and reading it.
The only reason it should get one star is because the cover and title entices people to read it.
The dialogue is flat, description is weak and the pace is plodding.
Their is nothing about ancient Egypt that is unique to it.
I am seriously surprised that the author is cited as one of Europe's leading Egyptologists, as he seems to know very little about Ancient Egyptian society (at least one gets that impression form reading his novels).
It is fine to be passionate about Ancient Egypt but to present it as a benign utopia where slavery does not exist, the death penalty only exists for the most heinous crimes, transgressions are frequently forgiven and women have equal rights is simply pathetically far from the truth.
Who doesn't know that the pyramids where built by slaves.
Slavery was part of Egypt's social structure and was rigorously enforced.
And to just place Menelaus and Helen of Troy in the middle was really lame.
Furthermore the characterization of Moses was another misnomer.
Don't spend time reading it, there are so many other historical novels of substance and that are exciting to read.

Simple and HIGHLY effective! A MUST have!

I cannot say enough great things about "How to Allow". I purchased this book about a year ago and have been floored at times with how much my life has improved since. Susan created an easy to use system that takes the guess work out of deliberate creation. I started researching the law of attraction a few years ago and although I believed it worked, my results were somewhat inconsistent and spotty. Thankfully, "How to Allow" filled in the missing pieces and has taught me the skills I was lacking for effective creation. Her book is THE manual you need to really put the law of attraction into action. It's simple and easy to understand and most importantly- it works! I'm forever grateful for this well written, insightful and life altering book!

Great investment-- great results! Thank you!

Susan Young's book "How To Allow" is more than a book, it's also a well planned, EFFECTIVE course and is definitely the best $29 investment I have ever made. I experienced a major shift in perspective right at the start of her book. Not long after, many opportunities started coming my way, quite unexpectedly.

I was named for and then interviewed for a promotion and was awarded it. At first I thought the promotion would be for approximately $3,000, possibly twice a year. It turned out to be a promotion for $5,000 that fall (they asked me if $5,000 was okay), and another $5,000 in the spring. I was shocked when I found out they needed me in the summer, too. You guessed it, another $5,000.00.

Beginning the next school year, they extended an offer to continue and offered me a raise for $13,500 for both semesters. (This is in addition to my regular salary).

In addition to these opportunities, private clients have been coming my way for help with personal statements for graduate school or editing an art auction catalogue. These clients have been higher caliber than previous ones and a pleasure to work with... I know my value and I'm communicating that better.

The investment in Susan's book and course was well worth it, many times over. Thank you Susan, for showing us "How to Allow." I will keep revisiting the course for inspiration.

About the Author
Robert J. Calvin is President of Management Dimensions, Inc an international consulting firm specializing in start-ups and early growth companies. Clients range from the Fortune 500 to the Inc. 100 and includes old and new economy firms. He also is an adjunct professor of entrepreneurship and marketing at the University of Chicago Booth Graduate School of Business where he teaches M.B.A. courses in New Enterprise and Small Business Management and Executive Education courses in Sales Force Management. During the last 30 years, in addition to consulting, teaching and writing, Professor Calvin has bought several medium-sized businesses that were losing money, managed them back to profitability, and resold them to larger concerns. He has also started several new economy businesses. Through these experiences he has created a step-by-step proven formula for success in start-ups and early stage companies. As a teacher, consultant, entrepreneur and executive, he combines strategy and theory with tactics and implementation. Professor Calvin has written numerous books, including "Sales Management, The McGraw-Hill Executive MBA Series" which was the winner of the Soundview Award as one of the 30 best business books in 2001 and latter translated into Chinese. Bottomline - Profit Max Driven Results!

Gosh, I had almost given up reading ?How To? books by Top B-School Professors!
University of Chicago Professor Robert Calvin actually writes a book that (while concisely dealing with strategic decisions) gets its head out of the trendy typical pie in the sky themes and goes straight to what drives the bottom-line of the firm!
However, It should be given a new title ?Nuts and Bolts of the Entrepreneur? with subtitle ?Do you have what it takes??
I really liked the section on raising money. Calvin uses insider knowledge of the Venture Capital Trade to get directly to the point of where and where not to look for funds!
If you are serious about making money this book is for you. If you are looking for an easy million this book is not for you. This Book has little sympathy for the quick dollar schemes but is filled with enthusiasm for the nose to the grindstone types!

A Great Guide For Any Student of Small or Large Business

I give this book a definite thumbs up. It is one of the most all encompassing titles out there on this subject. It has information on writing a business plan, getting financing, motivating salespeople, motivating employees in general, proper compensation for employees, inexpensive promotion and advertising, pricing products, and a lot more. It is written on a very practical and "how to" level. This book is less about business theory and more about application. Calvin's experience in starting/buying businesses and running them is apparent. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who wants a hands on tactical approach to running a small or start up business - or even big business for that matter.

Highlights the realities of being an entrepreneur

Most people think that all they need is a great idea and they will be able to start a successful business. Professor Calvin outlines, step-by-step, the realities of being an entrepreneur, how you need to prepare, and what you can expect. Specifically, he gives links and resources for doing market research, tells you where and how to go looking for financing, and emphasizes the key control points you must set up and monitor in order to be one of the businesses that actually makes it.
I am a consultant to start-up businesses, refer to his book often, and recommend it to my clients.

About the Author

Steven M. Rooney taught AP Chemistry at The Episcopal School of Dallas for thirteen years. After starting his career in research, he believed fervently in getting students interested in science by showing them how to think for themselves. Steven received an M.S. in chemistry from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. As an independent scholar, he lives in Dallas with his wife Teri, and their small parrot, Gypsy.

J.N. Campbell is an independent scholar whose interests include, twentieth century mass culture, and the vast swath that is, World History.� He received his M.A. in History from the University of Kentucky, and an M.A. from the Parsons School of Design.� A native Texan, he lives in Houston.

The book not only discusses the origins, development, and the uses of aspirin, it lends a historical perspective to this "miracle" drug. While the book is well documented and full of facts, it is also a "fun read" and most informative. You will not be disappointed in this purchase.

Another great one.

Just as my other reviews for this series from Schiller Publishing goes, I've been at this for eight years now and find the info contained here to be gold. Once again, the info here is solid. I'd recommend this book for those wanting to begin forge welding or those just interested in the subject, but its not the book to start with for getting into knife making...there is much more information for the beginner in previous books from this series.

I've noticed now that there are far fewer technical mistakes (references to particular things within the realm of metallurgy) in this series than other books from other publishers...I believe that to be because these books were written by German experts in their field whom are technically trained at University in their country, but I could be wrong about that. For reference, this is the fifth book in the series I've noticed is technically correct in comparison with some things by Ed Fowler, Jim Hrisoulas, and Wayne Goddard. They all create great work and their craftsmanship is pretty spectacular, but some of their explanations are simply not founded in science and truth (I'd still recommend reading them however).

Basic intro to making Damascus

This is probably the weakest of the volumes this publisher has recently released on knife making subjects.
The book itself is well produced and the instructions are easily followed with the copious high quality color photos.
Its worth getting if you have no idea where to start with making Damascus knives but if you have already dabbled in making some you won't find much of interest.
The section on forging appears to be a rehash of the info provided in the first book the publisher released about basic knife making.

Mostly a picture book

A decent over-view, but mostly in pictures. Really not a lot of critical details, such as time, temperature, etc. that would allow the first time practitioner to have a good experience. Also, references European steel alloys, not typically available in the US. Therefor, a good intro, but not a thorough instruction manual.

About the Author
Nina Glasgow, Ph.D., is Senior Research Associate in the Department of Development Sociology, Cornell University. Dr. Glasgow was Chair of the Rural Health Interest Group of the Rural Sociological Society from 1999-2002. Her current research focuses on the effects of social integration on the health newcomers to nonmetropolitan retirement destinations.

Lois Wright Morton Ph.D., is Assistnat Professor of rural sociology in the Department of Sociology at Iowa State University. Dr. Morton's research examines the social organization and civic structure of rural places, food systems, and population health.

Nan E. Johnson, Ph.D., is Professor and holds a joint appointment in the Department of Sociology at Michigan State University and in the Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station. Dr. Johnson is currently focusing her research on aging and eldercare in the United States.
