Richly textured, funny and insightful

Becoming Shamus is a skillful look at growing up - from a dog's perspective. But the growing pains belong not only to the lovable pet, but also to the family who cherishes him- and each other. It is an extraordinary look into ordinary lives and the grace and compassion that reside there. As Shamus reflects on his past, he draws us in to the events that shape his adoptive family. Love and companionship ease the loneliness of life's trials. Shamus is at the giving and receiving end of both. Puppy exuberance and childhood innocence develop into measured optimism as Shamus and his family face life's challenges head-on. Sometimes confused, sometimes angry, but always determined to make it work. The honest and powerful narrative sheds light on what it is to love, to laugh, to grow, to endure. A rich and inspiring first work.

Makes you think like a dog.

Everyone who either owns a dog or had one growing up, has at some point during this time period, thought "I wonder what is going through that dog's mind". Well, now you have a "manual" that can answer that question for you. This book is a very creative and unique way of answering that question plus it makes you start to think like a dog and not the person.
Many times during reading this I kept forgetting that it was from the dog's perspective.
The story was moving and very real to what any struggling family is going through on a regular basis. The difference is your viewpoint is from the dog.
A very easy and entertaining read that will make you laugh. It certainly makes me look at my current dog and wonder, "is he thinking what I think he's thinking?".

Highly recommend the novel "Becoming Shamus"

This story was a real page turner that I just couldn't put down! I highly recommend this novel. From the beginning and throughout the novel, it draws you into this family's journey and life experiences all from their dog's perspective. The characters are well developed and the story line is very engaging. I connected with the characters so much I cried when they did and laughed out loud with they did. The book makes you think about life from a dog's point of view too - very fascinating and a pleasurable read. You can really tell that this family cherishes their pets as family members. I look forward to this author's next book!
