Review

Teaching Science to Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Elementary Students includes relevant examples and real teacher moments. A great resource for in-service teachers.

- Karisa S. Dodds, Science Facilitator, Myers Park Traditional,Charlotte, NC

I have used Science Backpacks and found them a wonderful way to extend the school day and involve families in their child’s learning.

Many ideas were new to me and I enjoyed the fact that they were very simple to implement, yet would be a valuable use of my time.

- Kristi Trotter Hattenhauer, Science Coach/Lab Facilitator, Jonesboro Math and Science Magnet School, Jonesboro, AR

This book does a great job of giving research and theory while outlining practical ways of bridging the gap between information and how this process might look in a classroom.

This book combines all the elements of what is needed to successful teach in a culturally relevant way a subject that many minorities feel offer no connection to their present day lives or future goal attainment. Additionally, it can serve as a springboard for discussions on how teachers can improve the job that they are doing at better teaching and reaching all students.

- Cheryl Harris Curtis, Educational Consultant II, NC Department of Public Instruction, Raleigh , NC

Good Easy-to-Read Handbook for Elementary Teachers
By Determined Shopper
This book was a good book to use for someone who knows little about culturally and linguistically diverse students and for someone who has little time to educate themselves on the topics of interest. Many education majors are swamped with other responsibilities so they do not have time to read other literature. Because culturally and linguistically diverse students are failing, I believe this book would be a good and QUICK read to assist you in ensuring you meet the needs of ALL students. This book could use a little more background information on both populations.

Primary Phonics: Set 2 is OUTSTANDING!!!
By A Customer
Primary Phonics is a series of books designed to teach children to read. Each book contains a different, positive story and each is 16 pages long. The approach of this series is simple, yet profound: If you teach a child the sounds of the letters in words, then a child can sound out most words himself.
Most beginning reading books start introducing long complicated words, such as "while", "please" and "said" earlier than most children can read them. The theory, is that the children learn these as "sight" words. The problem comes, when a child has too many "sight" words to try and remember. The Primary Phonics readers (set 1) start out with only five sight words: "a", "the", "on", "to" and "and". These are listed on the back cover of each book. The rest of the words in the stories (in set one) are three letters or less and in set two, four letters or less. The first book in set one has only two vowel sounds to learn and 13 consonant sounds. As the books progress, more vowel and consonant sounds are added to this base. The method allows the child, as he reads, to learn and remember the sounds of each letter. By the end of set two, the young reader has progressed to seven sight words, 17 vowel and 17 consonant sounds.
These books have been around for many, many years and have taught many people to read. My mother purchased these books when I was a toddler at the recommendation of a private school teacher. I was "reading", these books at the age of three. This year I have been tutoring a family of homeschooled children, who were severely behind in their studies. Many have ADHD and severe dyslexia and have been labeled as "unteachable". I used this series of books for one boy in particular - a nine year old who could barely say his alphabet when he started. Within just two weeks he was soaring and comfortably reading these books.
There are also corresponding "workbooks" that go along with this series. They are a wonderful addition as well. They aren't necessary to teach reading, but can be helpful in learing to write and spell the words. The illustrations and words are the same as those in the readers, but also teach the children to recoginize the color words (yellow, red, etc...). I highly recommend this series to parents and teachers who want to help their children learn this important skill. They can help children of any age level or with any learning disability, read.

Best Phonic Materials on the Market
By L. M. Keefer
I have taught over a thousand children to read and these are the best phonic materials on the market. I use the accompanying workbook which goes with the series. This series is very sequential with lots of practice. The children love the stories. Use the whole series - begin with set one.

Racializing Jesus: Race, Ideology and the Formation of Modern Biblical Scholarship (Biblical Limits), by Shawn Kelley

Shawn Kelley's groundbreaking study shows how the major intellectual movements of the modern world, such as Orientalism and romantic nationalism, become infused with the category of race. He then traces the processes through which racially-grounded thinking has influenced modern biblical scholarship.
Dynamic and thought-provoking, the book incorporates a wide range of current debate, from critical race theory to the relationship between Martin Heidegger and National Socialism. It will give every student and scholar of biblical studies awareness of the subtle ways in which racial thinking has permeated their discipline, and encourage them to create new modes of biblical analysis.

Review
'In this brave book, Kelley identifies the role of racist discourse in the foundation and practice of biblical studies ... What is new is a willingness to identify the biblical-studies traditions shared by the National Socialists and today's Christian Churches.' - Robert Beckford, Church Times
