Review

Teaching Science to Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Elementary Students includes relevant examples and real teacher moments. A great resource for in-service teachers.

- Karisa S. Dodds, Science Facilitator, Myers Park Traditional,Charlotte, NC

I have used Science Backpacks and found them a wonderful way to extend the school day and involve families in their child’s learning.

Many ideas were new to me and I enjoyed the fact that they were very simple to implement, yet would be a valuable use of my time.

- Kristi Trotter Hattenhauer, Science Coach/Lab Facilitator, Jonesboro Math and Science Magnet School, Jonesboro, AR

This book does a great job of giving research and theory while outlining practical ways of bridging the gap between information and how this process might look in a classroom.

This book combines all the elements of what is needed to successful teach in a culturally relevant way a subject that many minorities feel offer no connection to their present day lives or future goal attainment. Additionally, it can serve as a springboard for discussions on how teachers can improve the job that they are doing at better teaching and reaching all students.

- Cheryl Harris Curtis, Educational Consultant II, NC Department of Public Instruction, Raleigh , NC

Good Easy-to-Read Handbook for Elementary Teachers
By Determined Shopper
This book was a good book to use for someone who knows little about culturally and linguistically diverse students and for someone who has little time to educate themselves on the topics of interest. Many education majors are swamped with other responsibilities so they do not have time to read other literature. Because culturally and linguistically diverse students are failing, I believe this book would be a good and QUICK read to assist you in ensuring you meet the needs of ALL students. This book could use a little more background information on both populations.

Primary Phonics: Set 2 is OUTSTANDING!!!
By A Customer
Primary Phonics is a series of books designed to teach children to read. Each book contains a different, positive story and each is 16 pages long. The approach of this series is simple, yet profound: If you teach a child the sounds of the letters in words, then a child can sound out most words himself.
Most beginning reading books start introducing long complicated words, such as "while", "please" and "said" earlier than most children can read them. The theory, is that the children learn these as "sight" words. The problem comes, when a child has too many "sight" words to try and remember. The Primary Phonics readers (set 1) start out with only five sight words: "a", "the", "on", "to" and "and". These are listed on the back cover of each book. The rest of the words in the stories (in set one) are three letters or less and in set two, four letters or less. The first book in set one has only two vowel sounds to learn and 13 consonant sounds. As the books progress, more vowel and consonant sounds are added to this base. The method allows the child, as he reads, to learn and remember the sounds of each letter. By the end of set two, the young reader has progressed to seven sight words, 17 vowel and 17 consonant sounds.
These books have been around for many, many years and have taught many people to read. My mother purchased these books when I was a toddler at the recommendation of a private school teacher. I was "reading", these books at the age of three. This year I have been tutoring a family of homeschooled children, who were severely behind in their studies. Many have ADHD and severe dyslexia and have been labeled as "unteachable". I used this series of books for one boy in particular - a nine year old who could barely say his alphabet when he started. Within just two weeks he was soaring and comfortably reading these books.
There are also corresponding "workbooks" that go along with this series. They are a wonderful addition as well. They aren't necessary to teach reading, but can be helpful in learing to write and spell the words. The illustrations and words are the same as those in the readers, but also teach the children to recoginize the color words (yellow, red, etc...). I highly recommend this series to parents and teachers who want to help their children learn this important skill. They can help children of any age level or with any learning disability, read.

Best Phonic Materials on the Market
By L. M. Keefer
I have taught over a thousand children to read and these are the best phonic materials on the market. I use the accompanying workbook which goes with the series. This series is very sequential with lots of practice. The children love the stories. Use the whole series - begin with set one.

Racializing Jesus: Race, Ideology and the Formation of Modern Biblical Scholarship (Biblical Limits), by Shawn Kelley

Shawn Kelley's groundbreaking study shows how the major intellectual movements of the modern world, such as Orientalism and romantic nationalism, become infused with the category of race. He then traces the processes through which racially-grounded thinking has influenced modern biblical scholarship.
Dynamic and thought-provoking, the book incorporates a wide range of current debate, from critical race theory to the relationship between Martin Heidegger and National Socialism. It will give every student and scholar of biblical studies awareness of the subtle ways in which racial thinking has permeated their discipline, and encourage them to create new modes of biblical analysis.

Review
'In this brave book, Kelley identifies the role of racist discourse in the foundation and practice of biblical studies ... What is new is a willingness to identify the biblical-studies traditions shared by the National Socialists and today's Christian Churches.' - Robert Beckford, Church Times

A lavishly illustrated guide to over 600 diseases of the skin and hair. Over the last two decades, he personally examined and collected the real cases of dermatopathology that are included in this book. He also visually demarcated the histologic features of each entity for easy illustration of the findings.

Great Dermatopathology book
By SM
I am a current Dermatology resident and my program uses Rapini as our core study book, but I have learned the most from Dr. Soeprano's book. I believe this book is fantastic. It has a well thought out approach to organizing pathologies. It is patterns based. The true beauty of this book however is it's wonderful images with great arrows pointing out critical findings. It also includes 4 DVD's with countless images that are extremely high quality. They can be viewed in low to high power, which allows you to get the actual feel of how a diagnosis looks under a microscope rather than just focusing on a small picture in a book. This has been invaluable to me. I have also been able to use many of the high quality photos in various presentations.

The Ambassador's Secret: Holbein and the World of the Renaissance, by John North

The Ambassadors' Secret is a radical reinterpretation of one of the worlds most famous paintings. Holbeins celebrated portrait of two French diplomats at the court of Henry VIII has usually been linked to the political and religious unrest of the day. John North shows that the painting has a very different, and previously undetected, central theme and many other meanings. Far from being random, the objects in The Ambassadors are deliberately, and very accurately, placed. In revealing exactly what they, and the painting, mean, The Ambassadors' Secret opens a remarkable window on the world of the Renaissance.

Understand the difference between looking and seeing
By Matthew Hovious
Art, history, religion, alchemy - these and more are the tantalizing ingredients with which John David North creates a singular work. "The Ambassadors' Secret" is a look at Hans Holbein's painting of Jean de Dinteville and Georges de Selve, two important 27-year-old Frenchmen who were in London in 1533. Even on the surface of things, this portrait is an unusual work: the two Ambassadors stand at either side of a curious collection of bric-a-brac that seems to be the real focus of the painting. North shows us how these items can be interpreted to determine a number of things, such as the date on which the two men are depicted (April 11th, 1533 - Good Friday). He discusses the nature and significance of the rhomboid shape at the men's feet, a geometrically perfect distortion of a human skull. Was the artist merely showing off by throwing in such a diabolically complex element, or was the skull meant to be a comment on the fleeting nature of life compared to the higher forces (time, the elements, religion) alluded to by the knickknacks on the shelves? Why is one string on the lute broken? Why does the painting suggest so many multiples of 3, even the men's ages, 3 x 3 x 3? Possible answers to these and many other questions are addressed by North, and once you've read this book, you will delight in looking at the painting again and seeing all the things you overlooked whenever you first encountered it.
Whether you approach this book for serious inquiry into an obviously intentional riddle, or just for entertaining scholarly conjecture about the intent of one of history's great painters, you are sure to enjoy it.

Dissecting a masterpiece
By Irene Rheinwald
Previous interpretations of this enigmatic painting, far more than a mere dual portrait of Jean de Dinteville and Georges de Selve, focussed upon symbols of Catholic, melancholy momento mori. Reminders of death abound: the skull (anamorphic representations were common - note the NPG portrait of Edward VI), the broken lute string, a world turned upside down (alluding to the Reformation), references to a universe divided, and a crucifix to remind man of Jesus' sacrifice, death and redemption.

North offers a radical, thorough interpretation of the religious and secular objects, astronomical devices, geometrical patterns of the floor, and, of course, the floating diagonal skull, relating them all to April 11, 1533, at 4:00 pm, Good Friday. He shies away from the political/religious schism of the day, stating it cannot be proved nor disproved.

Far more sophisticated than Dan Brown's silly, simplistic "Da Vinci Code" (the bane of art historians, legitimate as seeing faces in cloud formations), North proposes the geometrical lines of the piece, once extended and analyzed, are repeatedly at 27 degrees; significant, as 27 is divisible by three, the number of the Holy Trinity. Jesus was supposedly crucified at age 33, precisely 1,500 years before this painting. One could conclude Holbein's work contains subtle references to the Crucifixion and Golgotha, often represented as a mount of skulls (the present day site of the supposed tomb in Jerusalem contains an enormous, naturally formed skull in the rockface). A spiritual reminder to remain moral during troubled times, but perhaps not the previously assumed political statement. It is intriguing to note that Holbein, the German born court painter of Henry VIII, was a friend of astronomer and mathematician Nicolaus Kratzer.

The arguments are brilliantly realized, although not easily followed unless one has extensive knowledge of the period.

Why this painting? Why did Holbein paint this in 1533? Fifteen hundred years after the Crucifixion, the End of Days, the Apocalypse, seemed imminent. Charles V sacked Rome in 1527, Luther's Protestant heresy threatened Catholicism, Renaissance humanism clashed with medieval piety, a pregnant Anne Boleyn (Holbein's patroness) would be crowned Queen of England in less than two months' time - the stability, security of the old order had disappeared in the blink of an eye.

This book, over 400 dense pages long and extensively annotated, is one of the finest examples of art historical research I have ever encountered - innovative, securely grounded in history, religious speculation, art, and mathematics. A perfect reflection, indeed, of the era.

Gives a Well-Known Work New Meaning Five Centuries Later
By Steven Beishuizen
Author John North likens the title of the well-known National Gallery painting, "The Ambassadors" to calling a scene of the Christmas nativity, "Joseph and Mary". Indeed Holbein the Younger's 1533 painting of two French ambassadors at the English court of Henry VIII inspires thinking of symbolism immediately due to the array of scientific instruments depicted between the two subjects and the distorted scull placed below them. North exhaustively examines each item in the scene and ties each to themes dominating the politics of the day such as the growing friction between Henry VIII and Rome and the overall fascination of royal courts with science, alchemy, astrology, and astronomy. Several lines through the work are examined for their thematic relevance of the objects they connect and bisect, and other elements such as horoscopes are overlaid on the work for analysis. Included in the analysis is the setting of the exact time of the "sitting" to 4pm on Good Friday. It is clear that North came upon this subject from his past work investigating similar devices employed in the written works of Chaucer, and he presents a convincing argument here as well though his work is heavy of background information that tends to distract from the thesis rather than to support it in many ways. An interesting read, and true "fans" will be interested to know that Good Friday 2008 will mark the 25th 19-year Easter cycle since 1533. Is that some sort of silver jubilee?

Writing Okinawa: Narrative acts of identity and resistance (Routledge Studies in Asia's Transformations), by Davinder L. Bhowmik

Writing Okinawa is the first comprehensive study in English of Okinawan fiction, from it’s emergence in the early twentieth-century through its most recent permutations. It provides readings of major authors and texts set against a carefully researched presentation of the region’s political and social history; at the same time, it thoughtfully engages with current critical perspective with perspectives on subaltern identity, colonialism, and post-colonialism, and the nature of "regional," "minority," and "minor" literatures.

Is Okinawan fiction, replete with geographically specific themes such as language loss, identity, and war, a regional literature, distinct among Japanese letters for flourishes of local color that offer a reprieve for the urban-weary, or a minority literature that serves as a site for creative resistance and cultural renewal? This question drives the book’s argument, making it interpretative rather than merely descriptive. Not only does the book provide a critical introduction to the major works of Okinawan literature, it also argues that Okinawa’s writers consciously exploit, to good effect the overlap that exists between regional and minority literature. In so doing, they produce a rich body of work, a great deal of which challenges the notion of a unified nation that seamlessly rises from a single language and culture.

Review

'Bhowmik’s book also reveals an impressive command of Japanese and western literature, with which she frequently compares and contrasts the works of the Okinawan writers she discusses.' - HUGH CLARKE, University of Sydney, Japanese Studies 29/1

'At last, we have a book-length study in English that explores the rich diversity of modern Okinawan fiction. That fact alone would be cause for celebration, but Davinder L. Bhowmik's Writing Okinawa does far more than merely fill a gap in extant English Language scholarship on Okinawan Literature. Through detailed analysis of a wide range of fiction published from the early twentieth century to the present day, this book offers diverse perspectives into the region's perpetually shifting, yet ever tenuous, relationship with the Japanese state.' - Kristine Dennehy, Monumenta Nipponica 64:2 (2009)
